Using non Breville water filters?

Are they equal ??
Does the water filter help protect the machine or is it just for tatste

The original filter from Breville was just a carbon filter for removing chlorine taste. I think, don't take this as gospel, that the newer filters from Breville are supposed to have some softening resin. I would not rely on them even if that is true.

The best thing to do is use filtered non scaling water and don't even use an in tank filter. Do be sure to check for the screen in the outlet of the reservoir to protect against any accidental particles getting into the tank. The newer BDB's have the screen as part of the reservoir outlet. The older machines had the screen as part of the filter holder.

I can't speak to any other Breville reservoir configurations.
