Following on Peter's now-closed topic, This is what to expect from good water: I use only RPavlis water in my machine (distilled water + potassium bicarbonate) to prevent scaling. Today I removed the E61 mushroom for the first time to install a flow control device. After two years of daily use, here is what I found:

I'd say it works.
