Having picked up a used machine which can't go through a typical descaling procedure will that scale currently in the boiler greatly affect taste if I'm filtering the water now?

Limescale (calcium carbonate) would not dissolve readily and what little might possibly dissolve would not detract from taste. Conventional wisdom is that it might improve the taste. Calcium sulfate (gypsum) deposits are also too insoluble to dissolve and cause a taste problem.
