So how are you getting along so far? Do you have a favorite? I ordered the LM Strada 7g basket with a 41mm tamper. Cant wait to try it out.Moka 1 Cup wrote:Update. I have been using the 8g The Single for the last three days. Much better, actually I like it.
I lowered the dose and adjusted the way I was tamping and it works very well.
For comparison I'm using 8.6g. With the LM1 I use 8.2g with similar results and flavor. Same grinder setting.

Favorite? I'm not sure yet.
However we have just purchased an espresso machine and grinder for the office and we are using one of the 8g "The Single" baskets.
Our grinder does not need a funnel so the "The Single" is definitely easier to use (in terms of workflow), since it does not require one, contrary to the LM1.
Tamping requires paying a little more attention but I have noticed that the lighter you go (within limits) the easier it is to have a good puck and extraction.
So far so good.

No funnel. I use a small cream cup (with pour spout) to go from grinder to basket. This allows me shake out any clumps and I can pour out the grounds with relative accuracy as to where the grounds go. I'll see if this is still the case after trying the LM basket.Moka 1 Cup wrote:Favorite? I'm not sure yet.

I have to admit that I have not been able to use the LM1 without it. Maybe I have not tried hard enough, but without the 41mm Tidaka funnel I am not able to keep all the ground coffee inside the footprint of the recessed area while I am tamping.

During the past week I have been using only the 8g "The Single", both at home at the office. I think I will stick to it for the time being.
It is a little less forgiving but when you have fine tuned everything it easier and cleaner to use. I also think I like my espresso more (again, when fine tuned). I'm using my own distribution tool and the JoeFrex calibrated tamper. Setting the right weight on the tamper helps a lot. I also got a funnel from Amazon that works quite well with my grinder.
My son is still using the LM1 with the Tidaka kit for his iced coffees and cappuccinos. He is using a second portafilter and grinder for that. So I'm happy we have both baskets.
Curious to know how it goes with your LM1.

My set up. LM Advanced 7g single basket, Tidaka 41mm funnel, 41mm convex tamper. 7g in, 21g out...yum. Perfect for lighter roasted espresso.

Nice tamper. Is was thinking about buying the convex base for the JoeFrex but at the moment of the order I totally forgot about it.Almico wrote:My set up. ...
The smooth finish on your funnel seems to be completely gone. How long have you been using it?

Somewhat annoyingly, the 7gr basket that I ordered from the above La Marzocco link in August is not the same straight-sided basket as shown above - or in the pic on their website. It has the more conventional sloped sides. On the plus side, the version I was shipped will work with a 58mm tamper.Almico wrote:My set up. I use a nearly identical setup: 7g VST basket, the large Tidaka 41mm polished funnel (still shiny!), and a Reg Barber 41mm tamper with stubby handle like yours. Works great.Almico wrote:My set up.
