I used to pour more milk to froth than I could drink 6 to 8 oz, recently, I prepare milk more precisely to what I need around 4oz. when I pour less milk in the pitcher, I found the microfoam doesn't seems to form well, plus the foam and milk is kinda separated make me hard to make latte art, but the temp is the same around 150 to 160.

Is it the volume that matters?

For 4 to 5 ounces, it's best to use a small pitcher, max capacity 12 ounces. For 8 ounces, you probably use a 16 or 24 ounce pitcher, which will not work very well with the smaller amount.
