How to tamper asymmetrical, one-legged portafilters for single shots?

Beginner and pro baristas share tips and tricks.

I just acquired a brand new and shiny espresso machine. It comes with a "one-legged" portafilter for single shots. Good for my solitary coffee after dinner! :-)

However, how do I tamper a portafilter which does not stay properly on the benchtop? Mid-air just holding it in one hand and tampering with the other? Or do the tampering with the basket taken out of the portafilter? At the moment I use the edge of the benchtop to let the spout "dangle down" and keep the middle bit of the portafilter on the benchtop, but I have to be careful because this way it is easy to slide off the bench...

What do others do?

Hey !
Look at the device named "tamper stand" or "tamping stand", is what you need to...

Take the clip out and take the filter basket out. Dose and distribute in the filter basket and then put it back in the portafilter.

Option 3, put the underside of the portafilter on the edge of the counter (you don't need fancy tamping mat).

Not the most elegant solution, but I use a PVC plumbing reducing hub adapter. I keep looking for a real tamping stand but have not found one I liked. The pvc pipe is light enough to use on my scale

Thanks for all the answers - I will look into a tamper stand...

If what you're after is a stand so that you can really manipulate the coffee in the portafilter, then this would be my first choice.

LWW used to make a nice one but it's out of production. I wish they would bring it back!

I've been using one of Mr Pratt's stands for a couple of years. simple, works well, and easy to clean. ... ping-stand
