It all boils down to this: 1.25 lbs for six people. With triple baskets in one naked portafilter and a double spout portafilter that made 18 double shots and seven cappuccinos. Don't you think I am wasting too many beans? Because I used part of one bag and a whole 1 lb bag, I had probably four more double shots to dial in the grinder. That is two dial double shots per segment. I also had one double shot that after tamping and turning the pf over to get rid of the loose grounds and the basket just emptied out in the box. Also, the same thing happened with Mark when he was pulling shots. So, add 2 more to the 18 and you have 20 triple baskets used, plus the seven triple baskets used for the capps.

That is 27 triple baskets for six people in the house this morning. Don't you think this was too much coffee going through the grinder?

You'll go through coffee a lot faster with triple baskets. According to the poll How many DOUBLE espressos do you get per pound of roasted beans? most people are pulling around 25 per pound.

Then at 27 I am not too far off the mark having triple baskets. The first couple of days I was working the machine I had TONS of waste just falling all around and I have really honed that part of the waste out. With the Mazzer, it has an on/off button instead of the timer many have in the shops. I actually prefer the on/off, myself. But, I have used it to the point that I don't hardly even have over a gram per shot left over.

A pound and a quarter is equal to 567 grams. Ish. A triple basket is 21 grams. Also ish. 27 baskets with 21 grams in them is 567 grams. I think that you're right on track!
Or are you asking if you all have a consumption problem?
  • 1. Do you drink coffee alone?
    2. Do you drink coffee to feel better?
    3. Are you drinking coffee more often that you used to, or greater quantities when you do drink?
    4. Do you sometimes have the shakes or other discomfort the next morning?
    5. And does a pick-me-up espresso help make you feel better?
    6. Do close friends say you are acting differently these days
    7. Are you reducing outside activities that interfere with your coffee drinking?
If you answer yes to all of the above questions, welcome to the club!
