Meanwhile, it costs significant multiples of $10,000 for testing, prototypes and tooling to produce a new basket. VST would have to sell a lot of 45mm baskets to make it worthwhile.

Having had a few opportunities to pull shots on the 18g basket, it's enough to make me consider getting a 58mm group machine. Really neat stuff - I'm looking forward to reading a full in-depth review on these.

Well that sucks.
I was all at the pointy end of home espresso preparation; massive 68 conical grinder, pressure profile, PID temperature control, precise scale.. the lot. And without VST baskets, my gear is about as modern as pleated trousers.
