By "messy," if you mean there's water on top of the pick, that's not a big deal. Just means that there was a little extra room at the top of the basket, although that doesn't make it harder to diagnose the puck after pulling a shot.
I use a eurika mignon specialita grinder and a profitec pro 700 machine.

Hello everyone - thanks for all the help!

I decided to go back to the profitec basket that came with my machine vs the IMS basket I was using and all the channeling pains ended, and the ring also stopped appearing. It seems like my tamp was not wide enough to seal the edges of the IMS. I returned it and ordered a VST basket with a larger tamper for future experimentation. Currently, the profitec basket and normcore tamp are working great together!
