It's probably to match the BOB baskets which don't have holes at the edges. Don't ask me.

All E61 shower screens have a solid center section, although this one is definitely more unique. The reason is because the water coming out of an e61 group is in a single stream in the center, prior to hitting the screen.

e61 typically have a ≈1 inch water spreader which drops water around the shower screen. IMO, the best screens have the least restriction for even wetting.
