Bodhi Leaf: Kenya Rukira Natural ...Blueberry muffin tasting note as noted in Blueberry bomb coffee thread in Coffees forum.

"I ran into a guy that works with/for an importer that supplies US roasters. He said there's a blueberry muffin bean that I should keep my eye out for. It's not out yet apparently but coming up. It's a Kenyan natural from Kagunyu and Rukira."

Ha, that's the good part about these kinds of places. Same for ThetaRidgeCoffee too. I don't think my living space would take kindly to having a 132lb bag show up... so I relegate myself to these green splitters.

I ordered 5lbs yesterday. Nice deal with the discount. I've been missing a Kenyan for awhile and the notes look nice.

Don't want to go too much off-topic of this thread, but in short I wanna report that in my early opinion the Kenya Rukira Natural from Bodhi Leaf is tasty but I don't think it's the blueberry muffin bomb we're all hoping for. Maybe the others will have a different experience. Maybe more rest and a different profile will make it come out.

The coffee arrived earlier than I expected. Ordered Thursday afternoon and arrived Saturday, from West coast to East coast. I had time to roast a batch Sunday and taste it as drip this morning about 15 hours off roast. Even with the first roast not behaving exactly as I anticipated and a short rest, I'd still expect to get hit with blueberry muffin aroma when grinding and brewing, if there was a strong potential for it. I really did not have it here. I also did not really find much of it in the taste either.

Sometimes I wonder if blueberry bombs really are gone or if we collectively remember more distinct blueberry than we taste today. I know for me, the first blueberry bombs I tasted were very early in my coffee and roasting journey. The first one I roasted was Ethiopia Durato Bombe from Happy Mug in Aug 2020, and haven't had one that potent since.

Bummer to hear. Mine come today. Do you feel like they could have used more or less development? 15F seems like a good target that you had. Like you say, if there was potential for blueberry you would have found some around that development.

Hopefully you get a different experience. Either way, I think it's a very good bean and a good price, just maybe not the blueberry we want.

I think the development tasted good. Acidity was present but not tart, sweetness was good, flavor intensity was good (I'll need more tasting to attempt to describe what is in there but it was good). Others may have a better approach for <15°F development, I'm not sure it would've helped in mine. I'll have plenty of roasts with it and will experiment with different approaches. For one, I didn't expect it to lose as much momentum with the gas drops. Next time I will try to shave 30 seconds off the middle phase.

Roasted the Rukira last night and had some this morning. I don't have the graph in front of me but I went light. Measured at 25-26 on Roastvision. Bean built heat fast but was easy to pull back as FC closed in. I went fast through Maillard and only had a bit over 1min development. FC came a few degrees sooner than average. A clean and quality bean that can take a light roast without underdeveloped notes slipping in. It is sweet with bigger body than I expected at this roast level. Sorting left a lot to be desired at this price level but didn't seem to affect the cup.

I do get blueberry but only faintly. Not a bomb. The sweetness, body, and hit of blueberry could be read as blueberry muffin but IMO it isn't in-your-face. As the up cools the blueberry opens up more but again, not in a bombastic way.

My next roast will lengthen Maillard and go to 20F past FC with more development time to get to medium light.

It is a good coffee but not what heavy blueberry lovers are looking for.
