We have finally pulled the trigger and made the LAGOM 01 official yesterday! So the LAGOM 01 is now live!
Some of you who follows us may recall our teaser and leaks from early August about an upcoming new grinder release (actually it may have been traced back to our probably-not-that-funny April fool post
). The LAGOM 01 is more or less a complete redesign from the ground up, but one that is drawing inspiration from and leaning heavily into our grinder design's experience. Unofficially, we consider this our flagship grinder.
With the LAGOM 01, it encompasses all the elements we think what make our Lagom grinders great and we aimed to make it even better. Instead of increasing the price, a decision we seriously considered due to the richer features and development that went into it, we eventually made a bold decision to keep it the same as LAGOM P100. Of course there may be some unintended consequences on what it means for those who ordered a LAGOM P100 (more at the end of this post).
Here are some of the exciting new features I thought were worth highlighting (and some of the thoughts went into it):
Our in-house developed 98mm Mizen burrs, or more excitingly the 102mm Mizen Blind Burrs
We're fans of specialty coffee in general, and our preferred coffee style tends to be light to medium roasts, typically with a focus on delicate and terroir-oriented flavours. Therefore, opting for a large flat burr set seemed like an easy decision. With our new Mizen burrs, we aimed to create a versatile, everyday burr set that eliminates the need to compromise between pour-over or espresso brewing methods. The cup profile tends to be sweet and juicy, with a good/high clarity profile which we think should pair really well with lighter roasts while remaining approachable for most users. From my own testing and feedback from our Mizen burrs testers, it seems we've achieved this goal.
The LAGOM 01 was primarily designed to be used with a large burr set, which offers more flexibility in design and a longer grind path, typically associated with better taste outcomes (though there can be exceptions). However, we also considered that some people may want to use the more common 98mm burrs. To accommodate both options without compromising the housing size, we designed the 01 to work with our in-house developed 102mm blind burrs and made it compatible with 98mm burrs as well.
For those who want to experiment with different 98mm burrs and have the luxury to do so, there will be an option to choose the 98mm burrs with mount holes or purchase an additional carrier set separately (price and details TBD). However, if you simply want a burr set that works without the need for experimentation, we are recommending to go with the 102mm blind burrs for the full experience.
Ultra low retention
In our opinion, one of the main attractions of single-dosing grinders is their near-zero grind retention, whether it's static or dynamic retention. Thus, much design efforts have gone into optimizing the grind path, interactions within the chamber, chute design, incorporating a static reducer feature, and introducing a new knocker design, among others. Combined with the blind burrs, these elements further reduce the overall retention, which we cheekily refer to as "ultra-low retention". However, it's worth noting that we're talking about marginal improvement here (an improvement nonetheless). The other grinders like the P64 and P100, IMO, has pretty much achieved practically "zero-retention".
Redesigned tool-less disassembly with adjustable zero calibration
This is another exciting new element that personally excites me, as it combines the benefits of both new and old designs. For those who have followed us for some time, you may recall that the original P64 and P100 featured what we referred to as a tool-less disassembly system. It basically just a fancier way to say you could disassemble the burr chamber for cleaning without the need for any tools.
However, one challenge we faced was that each burr set has a slight variation, and the threading could be unpredictable, thus requiring a way to calibrate the zero point for each unit and burr set.
For a while, we used a sticker system to mark the zero point or employed the rotating ring system on the P100 (which had its pros and cons). Most recently, we opted for a screw-mounted assembly in favor of an adjustable calibration system, as seen in the new P64.
With the 01, our design team took a crack at trying to achieve the best of both worlds. So, there's no need for stickers for zero calibration, and yet we have a permanent adjustable calibration system (one that can't be accidentally or unintentionally undone).
Magnetic modular platform for portafilter and grind cup
This is yet another interesting take in my opinion. Instead of sticking with our 'signature' portafilter fork, which admittedly works well most of the time, does have some limitation in certain specific context, so the team has decided to start from scratch and revamped it. So the new platform means that there's less likely for portafilter drop to happen (for slightly off-sized or smaller 58mm portafilters), a replaceable insert liner has also been added to eliminate metal to metal contact (for a more pleasant user experience). While this may seem obvious in hindsight, incorporating this sytem into a package for seamless workflow had been quite challenging. So I am glad to see this happened on the 01.
If you're curious and want to learn more, I would also recommend reading our LAGOM 01 product page and the Pre-Order page which our team has worked on.
Oh, another elephant in the room to address is related to our decision regarding the pricing of the P100. To our existing P100 owners, we also have some plans to continually provide updates to bring it closer to the LAGOM 01 - so you are by no mean forgotten. In the current pipeline, we have the Mizen 98mm set, which will be made available in late October. Additionally, we are working on a cup platform (a feature that has been frequently requested), and a retrofit knocker design based on the 01's design. For the retrofit updates, we will email you (if you ordered from us directly and we have your email record) when they are ready. As for exisiting P100 pre-orders, we haven't forgotten about you either! We will also get in touch hopefully today or on Monday.
I think that's all for today!

So while this thankfully doesn't come across as pure vendor lock-in, could you expand a bit more about the reasoning behind 102mm burrs, making separate carriers a necessity? Instead of going the route several other manufacturers have chosen for blind burrs.OPTION-O wrote:The LAGOM 01 was primarily designed to be used with a large burr set, which offers more flexibility in design and a longer grind path, typically associated with better taste outcomes (though there can be exceptions). Thanks Jonas! I guess the context/intention is not quite obvious and I can totally see where you're coming from. We approached and viewed this grinder as a brand new model, essentially as our flagship product, where we try to incorporate what we know and can to push the boundaries to maximize its performance. So it was designed in the spirit of chasing the marginal gain, how much more can we push with this housing format. So in the end we settled on 102mm.Jonk wrote:So while this thankfully doesn't come across as pure vendor lock-in, could you expand a bit more about the reasoning behind 102mm burrs, making separate carriers a necessity? Had this been intended as a lock-in we had already failed in doing so by offering the 98mm version burrs that fit with existing 98mm burr grinder (e.g. the P100/EK), and 98mm carrier option on the 01

It also wasn't (at least initially) intended at users who frequently swap 98mm burrs, so we focused on developing an excellent burrset (which we think is what most users would want, instead of being presented with too many similar burrs options and fear of missing out, detracting from the experience instead), aimed at those who have similar taste preference to us and prefer light-medium roasts (e.g. this burrset might not be for classical high-body conical style). For those experimenting with burrs, we are also of the opinion that the 64mm burr platform might be more feasible due to the cost-effectiveness.
That being said, we later decided to offer a 98mm option, precisely for those who enjoy tinkering and enjoy experimenting with different 98mm burrs - no doubt there is a market for this too and some of our users fall into this camp (and in part to offer a perk to our existing P100 users). Additionally, it wouldn't be too difficult to have aftermarket burrs made in various sizes, including 102mm, so it's not quite a lock in. But I would agree at this very moment there is very limited option. We do intend to develop more burrs (whether in house or in collaboration with others), but it can take some time and the burrs have to offer different enough experience to justify their existance. In the end, we didn't think the choice between 102mm and 98mm burrs was the main limiting factor, but 102mm just happens to align better in the spirit of the LAGOM 01 in pushing the envelope and maximizing marginal gain.
