But I have to say, although it is comparatively easy to build such a thing as a prototype, product development is hard and takes time (if I had some budget, I might try for fun, but I'd very likely lose it all).

I do think that James Hoffman is right when he says that most of the smart scales have functionality that exists because it can, not because it should, and as a consumer you are paying for this functionality.

I would be quite surprised if the hardware of an acaia is more than 10% of the cost of the scale (which is not uncommon, but still...). I also think that all the smart features, with their apps and web services, could be in the same ballpark, and it would be fun if some big manufacturer picks up that theme and launches something similar without the frills for like $50, still making a healthy profit. Maybe the market is not yet big enough for that to happen though.
