Worn Tabs on Portafilter

Hello,
I recently purchased a 1997 dual switch la Pavoni consumer model. Everything on the machine seems to be in good working order, however the portafilter's tabs are extremely worn and I'm having a lot of trouble trying to lock the portafilter in place...especially when it is up to temperature. The seller outlined other issues with the machine which were really all cosmetic and therefore non issues but they failed disclose the condition of the portafilter or take pictures of the incredibly worn tabs. I feel like he failed to mention them because he knew he wouldn't have been able to sell the machine for as much as he did and I feel I wouldn't have paid as much as I did had I known I would have to buy a new portafilter.
He says the portafilter shouldn't be an issue and that in his opinion it worked fine last he used it. Basically I'm wondering if my issues locking it in place are user or equipment error?

Granted that the basket will cover the damaged edge of the portafilter
those wings are literally the worst I've seen in 20 years
I would not consider it a good usable portafilter and I'm not just saying that in trying to sell you new one, but is in bad bad conditions,
I'm surprised that is not leaking all over the place.

That one lug you show looks like it's either broken or has been ground off. There's a lot of scratches on the side of the portafilter that may be due to grinding, maybe the seller was trying to make this one fit the machine.
You could try replacing the group gasket if it's worn if the portafilter doesn't seem to lock well into place but you may want to consider replacing the portafilter or perusing a refund. How does the inside of the group look where the portafilter locks into place? Is there any damage there that would be a problem after replacing the portafilter? If not, this may be a good opportunity for you to pick up a bottomless portafilter which you're probably going to want anyway.

It looks good, I'd plan on replacing the group gasket and picking up a bottomless portafilter for it, assuming that the rest of the La Pavoni is in good working order.
You might also want to replace the shower screen. Stefano has these parts for sale.

Thanks for you response...I would like to purchase a new one and am curious about pricing. Ive seen a lot variation in price on the web though looking at your website I see they range from 80-125? what is the cost of a used option?
Copy that and thanks!yakster wrote:It looks good, I'd plan on replacing the group gasket and picking up a bottomless portafilter for it, assuming that the rest of the La Pavoni is in good working order.
