So after ten pages of reading, I come here to find that the lever is dead, but long live the piston?

(Some of the discussions on manual vs. not made me think, thanks to other car anologies in this thread, about how steer by wire and brake by wire have changed steering and braking under the hood, yet they're still steering and braking.)
