I am searching for something to use on the Pro 800. I ran across the Flair Temperature Strips and I like the look of them. I'm just hesitant to use them because the Flair is only hot for a couple of minutes at a time, whereas I leave my machine on for several hours at a time. I'm wondering if the strips would deteriorate under this condition. Please let me know if you've tried them.

It shouldn't be a problem, similar Omega temperature strips have been used on La Pavoina and Cremina groups that are on for a lot longer, but the temperature is approximate and you don't be able to get a good reading degree by degree. You can pick up the Omega temperature strips individually at Orphan Espresso here:

Thanks Chris, I might give them a shot then. I was considering ordering from OE, but unless I'm missing something the only shipping option is UPS 2nd day air for $38.69 :|

Hmm, that's odd, it seems like the sort of thing you could drop in an envelope and mail off first class.

I bought some of those for use with a Robot. I think I still have a couple. I can't remember offhand where I ordered them but I know I didn't pay that much.

They worked okay. Kind of hard to remove once I got tired of them.

Stefano also sells them with USPS shipping, or you can buy them direct from Omega in quantities of 10 or more. They become less intense and hard to read after a year or two on the machine, so it's good to have spares tucked away in a cabinet. The 60C - 90C range is a practical one for groupheads. Once you get used to interpreting the gradual color shifts from black/brown/green/blue (on the Omega strip) they are somewhat more precise than 5 degree increments: (See How accurate are temperature strips: time lapse video ).

I found the problem with the shipping calculator (still working out some of the small glitches on our new website) In this case I lowered the weight of the temp strips to more accurately provide shipping cost, and forgot to lower the weight limit on the USPS methods, so they didn't show up.

Our new website has all of the orphanespresso and oehandgrinders & all of the how-to's, so nothing has gone away... It's been a summer long labor of love moving all the info, correcting odds & ends here & there & organizing so you can find the info more easily (I HOPE!)

You can always email & ask to check the shipping cost, or whatever (I'm not at the computer 24/7, and some days I'm doing other stuff in the shop, so I don't always answer right away, and remember, email doesn't always arrive & get read, so feel free to email again)

When USPS changes their rates, for example, it messes up their shipping calculator & the shopping cart will only show non-USPS, or will only show some of the USPS rates instead of all of that should be available (changes which are not infrequent these days)

In case everyone didn't know it already, USPS has changed what is available for shipments. Ground Advantage has replaced the old First Class Letter & package - they are the same price as each other. No advantage is gained in putting something in an envelope (one of the limitations is that the envelope must be fully flexible - and less than 1/4" thick, so bubble envelopes don't qualify for letter any more). Ground Advantage is the cheapest method I can use that has tracking. Tracking is needed for purchases because it's required proof for every online payment method should there be any question of shipment. It's also the only way to know if a package has gotten lost, or misrouted, is just moving slow, or is on the way back to the warehouse for some reason.

We too are nostalgic for the days gone by when we could lick a couple of stamps and have the assurance the letter or box would arrive, and the check was in the mail...

Hope this helps,
Barb

I found my old order and it was directly from Flair. Shipping was less than $5 but they charge a lot more per strip than OE. I paid about $20 total for three strips and I think you can get the same for about half as much from OE. A few dollars each is pretty inexpensive.

Cheaper still (free) would be for me to send you one I never used and don't need. The range is: 70/75/80/85/90/95/100°C. PM your mailing address and I'll drop it in an envelope with a stamp. No tracking! :-)

Thanks for the offer John! I just ordered from Flair last night so I'll see how these work out.
