Hello,

I always wanted to get a WAFO basket for my LSM group head after watching Brian Quan's YouTube Video.
So I reached out to WAFO and was told they only make 58.5mm basket. When asked about customizing a 54mm basket, the answer was:
Nope, we are an industry standard from made and making.
Not sure what that suppose to mean, but it is their business decision...

There is no reason to bother asking Weber about a customized Unifilter. Answer would be no.

So I went back to my IMS B66 basket envying others until when I saw the Billet Basket from SWORKSDESIGN. I immediately reached out to Shelton to see if he is welling to customize a basket for LSM group head.

Folks, the answer was yes. We are currently in the quoting process. Working in the machine shop for past 10 years, I understand this is not a easy job to do. Of course, I am willing to pay a premium for the customization.

My machine is ACS Vesuvius EVO Leva. I already send OOTB portafilters, OOTB basket, IMS B662TH26M basket to Shelton to test with until the basket is made and tested. We already measured the dispersion block, the cylinder that holds the shower screen who goes into the basket when portafilter is engaged, at 53.6mm when brewing temperature is at 92C and group head temperature is at 98C. (Temperature value is from machine display). Standard 54mm basket will not work in this case. A perfect basket for LSM will be designed and manufactured. For Vesuvius owners, this basket is guaranteed to work with your machine if ACS is reasonably consistent with their dimensions. It would be even better if other LSM users could send in some diameter dimension of the dispersion block.

For anyone who is interested, this might be a good chance to order. My assumption is higher quantity will yield a lower cost for us, and probably better profit and lower risk for Shelton.

I will keep posting on what happens next....

The baskets are finally built and shipped, here are some pictures:

Shelton takes such good pictures, check out his instagram photo

I have to say his photo makes my portafilter look a lot more highend than what it is....

I will be doing some testings and uploading a video when I get the basket.

How are the holes put in these baskets? Traditional ones are seemingly punched. EDM, ECM, laser, micro drilling all seem like options. The new super fast pulsed laser machines might be my choice.

You could also do fun things like experiment with short slots instead of holes. Maybe even do tapered holes. Not sure if either would do anything to the flow.

That would be a good question to Shelton. I would have done the holes in the same setup where the basket is getting milled. Small hole on 17-4 stainless steel seem to be challenging. This will take a very expensive spindle with little runout.

I think the hard part is not how to do it rather how to do it fast and cheap.

I think light saber tooth pick could do it

In all seriousness, creating three thousand uniform holes, in a solid steel basket, having a diameter of 58mm and a thickness of close to 1mm, has to be a high tech process. Part of why these baskets cost what they do.

It means they cannot speak proper English.
Neither milk, nor sugar.
