WDT needle size vs. portafilter hole size
I've been using the SWorks WDT tool with 0.25mm needles and a Pullman 19-22g basket on my Linea Micra for a few months now. One small annoyance that I occasionally experience is that the 0.25mm needles are smaller than the holes in the Pullman basket. They will sometimes get snagged in the hole and a needle will get pulled out of the WDT tool. I decided to order some 0.30mm and 0.35mm needles from SWorks to see if that solves the problem, and thought I'd report my observations in case anyone else is OCD enough to be bothered by this.
Pullman 19-22g basket:
- 0.25mm needles easily fit in the holes and get snagged. Both the 0.30mm and 0.35mm needles are larger than the holes and will work fine.
Original LM 14g basket:
- 0.25mm needles easily fit in the holes and get snagged. Both the 0.30mm and 0.35mm needles are larger than the holes and will work fine.
Original LM 17g basket:
- 0.25mm needles easily fit in the holes and get snagged. The 0.30mm got snagged once or twice but was a pretty tight fit in the holes. The 0.35mm needles are larger than the holes and will work fine.
I'm not sure if the difference in the LM baskets is just manufacturing variation in the different holes in the baskets, or if the 14g basket has different hole sizes than the 17g basket.
In any case, the 0.35mm needles appear to work fine in all bakets, with the 0.30mm needles being fine in all but the LM 14g basket.

Digest from multiple sources suggests 0.35 is the preferred needle size for most who care. 0.3 was OK, but 0.4 too big. Of course, some insist a single, wooden toothpick is also a benefit.
LMWDP #716: Spring comes, and the grass grows by itself.
Someone here suggested inoculation loops which I purchased a pack of. They are very thin and have a loop at the bottom so no snagging on holes. I do occasionally need to straighten them out.
Again multiple sources that I have surveyed say the optimal needle size is 0.25 to 0.35mm. I moved from 0.4mm to 0.3mm in my WDT tool and it made a big difference. I had been using VST baskets, now a SworksDesign bullet basket without snagging the holes.
