Hi,

I am trying to find out if most portafilters weigh around the same?

As the portafilter is in the grouphead while heating so it adds to the thermal mass of the grouphead, which has implications on heat time and thermal stability of the grouphead.

I am using a naked Rancilio portafilter and it weighs 474.4gms (503.9gms with the IMS double competition basket), as i understand it is mostly solid brass.

Anyone with other naked and spouted portafilter weights?

Cheers

394.2 with the 102 Rancilio basket (14g) and 394.4 with the 103 (18g).

This is the Ebay special "E61" bottomless portafilter.

Cheers!

My custom bubinga bottomless pf, that Dave Stephens made for me...

PF handle w/ 17g Strada - 379.1g
PF handle w/ 20g VST - 381.6g

I've not weighed my Rancilio naked pf, or any of my other handles, but it would be pretty easy. I'll be going downstairs for another drink shortly, and will update this reply afterwards.

Ok, so I weighed my other handles several days ago, but forgot to come back and load my other measurements. Sorry! Here they are...

empty naked Rancilio - 422.4g
empty Izzo double spout - 501.6g
empty Izzo single spout - 503.4g

1962 Gaggia 58mm no basket keeper spring/groove 649.5g no basket. Data logger confirms that the heatup times with or without PF+basket in group have no significant impact on heatup time and room temperature/air circulation has a much larger impact.

Interesting that there is a range of weights for all the portafilters. Especially between the two naked Rancilio ones, curious to see what others have for their naked portafilter especially the ECM ones.

Don't forget that the metals used, as well as the relative densities, would likely have some effect on thermal behavior. So a mostly-brass portafilter could have different characteristics from a stainless steel one of the same weight. Just conjecture, though, as I'm not a metallurgical engineer.

I always thought it was intriguing that my wood handled La Marzocco PF with 21g basket and Kafatek funnel together weigh exactly 500.0g.
