I know we've chatted before on here, Insta and FB so you have my full respect (nothing against others in the industry). You have nothing to prove, those who know.... know.Lancehedrick wrote:What makes me unreliable out of curiosity?
This sounds interesting, I don't need another grinder and don't do brew much either but now I want this haha. I just bought a fricken 1zpresso Q2 w/ the heptagonal burrs for whatever and some travelling and shocked the hell out of me how good it was for brew even against steel burr Vario and SSPs.

Lance, I'm going to say what others are too afraid to say.Lancehedrick wrote: Ok. But I have a cease and desist letter they sent. And my promoting 1zpresso has NOTHING to do with that beef. If you go to the reddit thread about my speaking against their bullying tactics, it was well AFTER I called K plus better than comandante.
I genuinely don't think comandante is as good. No fixed burr, no innovation, no exterior adjustment, massive steps. Not competitive in this day and age.
I'm fine if you don't subscribe. I'd ask that you just don't watch any If youre not wanting to support. Plenty of other incredible creators out there. Cheers
Its the mustache.
J/K. Keep up the quality content. You have a niche audience inside of a niche market. It's different and thats a good thing.

Don't get worked up over someone saying they don't trust you.
I appreciate that you review the stuff that you are excited for.
I take every video as the small gems they are.
Reviewing is an art form.
The classical way was to write only the good stuff about something.
If a Lab Sweet review doesn't include anything about pour over it does speak volumes.
That said you could use the superlatives as clickbait and not say it in front of the camera at all. I know you could describe the uncountable number of 80mm burrs with tasting notes and you should.
Calling some burrs unusable for certain drinks and other not could be an option. Maybe this would be more helpful than tasting notes.
Calling some better than other is as false as it is lazy. Please don't hate me
Speaking of lazy the taste comparison between the 078 and the Ode was rushed. I assume it it was the middle of the night but rather sacrifice it to the gods of the cutting table.
next time just maybe you could dial in both grinders for best taste instead of same-ish grind size and let your "cameraman" taste it. I know that went wrong more often than not but that makes it authentic.
Also for the 078 review declaring it as being better for workflow for espresso before testing it was premature and I double dare you to say something like that again.
Recently you asked on Insta if you should change your format.
In my opinion you should play the game and you should play gloves off. Get affiliate links, get sponsors, get money.
You are trustworthy and earning money is not gonna change that.
Just don't get caught slipping, I believe you won't.
I wouldn't say you should change your format, but if you wanna play the algorithm game why not play it your way respectively my way if you like it
You could keep the approach the very same but just split the video in 10 min parts if it makes sense, release them at the proper time of the week and day to maximize clicks and so on.
Hell you could even split them up in segments like opinion and facts. Add some shorts in there for the algorithm too.
I personally would be ruthless and keep the audience on its toes by randomly mixing the hardware stuff with the conclusion just to make a 10 min segments for the algorithm.

What somehow might make you not trustworthy for some is your overwhelming positivity, please dont loose it. You are reviewing stuff you are exciting for and show your excitement, who could blame you. Maybe rather say 1 or 2 sentences when that is the case to share where you are coming from.Lancehedrick wrote:...

It's simple. Don't like it. Don't watch it. The level of entitlement of some of the members in this "community" is mind blowing. Funny thing it is the same names I have seen before in other threads always arguing.

I always look forward to your videos, especially in the new studio. And how much time you spend genuinely answering folks in the comments section, in detail. And guess what?Lancehedrick wrote:Please let me know what I do that makes me unreliable. I don't do affiliate links, I don't partner with brands, I've literally taken massive potential payments and thrown them down the toilet to maintain authenticity. Do you all just not like my personality? If so, please say that. I try my hardest to be authentic and do all this youtube stuff in the middle of the night so as to not affect my time with my kids. Disheartening to read the rampant distrust when I'm working so hard for the opposite.
If it compensates you in some way directly or indirectly and you are still genuine in your approach, great. More power to you. I think people want some retired billionaire with unlimited time to review every esoteric coffee device that hits the market. Not happening.

Lance, this is just HB trolls sitting home trolling and doing their poison-spreading thing. The list of the people, institutions, and who know what else they "do not trust" is probably endless. Just do your thing and no worries. They are just loud that is all, and the world we are living at the moment.Lancehedrick wrote:What makes me unreliable out of curiosity? I've been working in coffee a decade, have been on sensory panels, am calibrated with green buyers and Q instructors, etc. I've competed and coached. I buy most of my equipment by digging into my own pocket. I funnel all I make from youtube (just 56k in 1.75 years) back into youtube. I still work a full time job at Onyx Coffee Lab.
What about what I do disallows trust?
I've not even taken a sponsor until now in order to gain trust and not spam ads.
I'm dipping so deep into my own pocket that it has become unsustainable.
So, curious what the issue is? My theatricality?

Indeed!Giampiero wrote:Eventually should open a new thread about influencers/youtubers/reviewers.
For HB reviews I've participated in, I think the keys to credibility are having multiple reviewers, transparency by posting ongoing details during the research phase, and most importantly, blinded group taste testing. Without these elements, I treat most reviews as one person's opinion that may or may not align with my experience. Since most YouTube channels are all about ONE person's opinion, however well informed, I find them interesting and entertaining, but far from the last word on the subject they are covering.Lancehedrick wrote:Appreciate it! I'm not upset so much about the comments. Just confused and would love to know what would garner trust.
By the way, since this topic is no longer about the Timemore grinder (if it ever was), I'll change the title and add a note in the first post. For those who are interested in prior discussions of influencers, it's worth reading the site's taxonomy of Friends, insiders, promoters, and influencers.
I see your point. My day job is actually YouTube video production in the I/T field and I fully appreciate the value of "catchy" titles. But in my view, a message immediately loses credibility when the lead is something like "XYZ: The ABC Killer"Ivyb82 wrote:There's no need to constantly proclaim that something is the best or better than a comparable item.

I like Lance's videos. I also find it a little ridiculous to assume every reviewer on Youtube is ethically compromised while posters here aren't. Astroturfing comes in many forms and can include posts on sites like this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing Everything one sees on the Internet should be taken with a grain of salt, but that doesn't mean videos on Youtube and posts here are useless. Disclosures of conflicts of interest, i.e., commercial relationships always help. The nice thing about video is you can see the product in action. But even when there is no ethical compromise, drinking coffee is a largely subjective experience and what one reviewer like Lance finds "juicy," another might find too tart. One issue I have with this latest review is the name "Niche Killer" when Lance hadn't even tried the new espresso burrs yet. A better title given the video's subject matter would have been "Fellow Ode Killer." But overall, I like these review videos, even when I disagree with them.

It seems healthy to me to approach any reviewer who regularly puts out content giving lots of glowing recommendations for products that often cost multiple thousands of dollars with some amount of skepticism. In fact, I'd be worried if you didn't approach their reviews with skepticism. That hardly seems like trolling or poison-spreading to me.kidloco wrote:Lance, this is just HB trolls sitting home trolling and doing their poison-spreading thing. 100% agree. No one asks for my credentials when I tell them the Vario is a POS and the Niche is awesome.LewBK wrote:I like Lance's videos. Also, it's less about skepticism being wrong and more about blanket distrust, not skepticism, for anyone with a platform no matter how they conduct themselves. It just makes no sense.
To say that someone like Hoffman or Lance can't be trusted at all because they're YouTubers is tone deaf in 2022, especially when you listen to anonymous forum posters spit out anecdotes that have 100% influenced your buying decisions.
