Sudden Onset Artisan Modbus Error: readFloat()

Hi Everyone,
I've been using Artisan attached to a Watlow EZ-Zone for about 2 years with no issue. Last week, we started getting this Modbus error which was fixed by unplugging and plugging in the FTDI usb interface. This week the error seems to be here to stay. We tried upgrading and downgrading Artisan 0.9.7 and 0.9.9 as well as updating the FTDI driver.
Anyone else ever see anything like this? Here are a couple of screenshots. I'm hoping for a bad extension cable on the FTDI or something simple. I have a new a new one coming Friday to try.
Thanks!

Finally solved our problem.
It turns out the FDTI RS485 to USB converter went bad. We put a replacement in this afternoon and poof! everything worked.
It makes sense given the sudden onset of the problem. Of course, we had to check everything else first.
Thank you to MaKoMo for the PMs and helpful suggestions.
