Hi all-
Long time reader of this forum, but just joined. I've been roasting for a little while on a Hottop and got the itch for something closer to a production style roaster (not sure how closely a BC-2 really fits this). As I move along the learning curve, a few have actually started asking to buy my coffee so thought a step up in roasters would help me learn more, who knows. Anyway, look forward to learning from others here. I already have a lot of questions, but I'll save them for other threads.

The BC Roasters are awesome. I also started with a Hottop but I went to a BC-5 due to increased demand for coffee.

Big bump, Hottop to BC-5! So glad to hear you're finding such a market for your coffee. Would love to have done that, but I'd have to trade my wife for that.

Haha. My wife drinks more coffee than I do and she is my truest critique and she is the one who suggested I go for the BC-5. I initially planned to go with the BC-3, but the difference was only about $1K and I figured with the demand I had, I would have no issue recouping the diffference. I sell between 5-10 lb per week.

How was your transition from the Hottop to the BC-5? Does the BC-5 have the exhaust temp probe like the BC-2?

The learning curve was steep. I learned very fast that the Hottop responded much slower than the BC roaster due to the BC roaster using gas vs. electric for the Hottop. It took a couple of months to really "feel" the system. The BC-5 has both the ET and BT probes, similar to BC-2. The only difference is that it is a bigger machine that has 8 burners. I can easily roast 5 lb in one batch, and I roasted even 6 lb, but it was a little more challenging. Roasting less than 2.5 Lb per batch is challenging as I still have difficulty following the roast profile I want. I roasted 1 lb, but was not satisfied with how the roast went. I typically follow a declining ROR and want to hit certain temperatures at certain times. This is difficult if I don't have enough coffee beans in the roaster.
