Greetings,

I should start this by saying I have never roasted coffee before. Scott Raos book will be arriving at my door tomorrow.

I'm hoping to place an order for a Quest M6 (new 600g model) on Monday and I was hoping to get a little advice. What thermocouple do people on here recommend and what else would I need to connect it to a pc so I can use Artisan? (I've seen Phidget mentioned, what model?) Quest people sells a thermocouple for 25$, is this a quality unit? How many would I need?(BT,MET,ET so 3 thermocouples? Or will one get all info I need?) do i also need a digital thermometer? Quest comes with 2 analog ones but I assume these are worthless?

Are you sure it won't come with some? In any event read this first. It's long. And technical.

Both of those links is just what I was looking for thank you. The Quest comes with 2 analog thermometer but the thermocouple is optional at 25$ USD, which seems pricey to me cause I find I can get 2-4 on Amazon for the same price. I'm wondering if there would be a difference in quality/accuracy.

Vince consider the RTDS. I think the most important sentence is this one -
Note that the sets use probes with a diameter of ø3.2mm which are considered slow by some. In the post linked above we argue that thinner probes have a worse signal-to-noise ratio, break regularly, and their speed advantage does not matter for the application in coffee roasting.

Does the number of wires and the connector type matter? I assume connector type won't matter cause I'll be using the bare wire to connect to a phidget? And what about the number of wires? I see some RTD probes with 2 and 3 wires at the connector end.

Thanks again

Hi Vince,

I use a Phidget 1048 with 3 thermocouples that I bought directly from Molly when I bought my M3s. Works really well!

The more wires on a RTD (NOT thermocouple, those have always just exactly 2) the better. The Phidget TMP1200 module supports 2, 3 or 4 wire RTDs. Please consult the excellent user guide of the device.

The link you posted says that the tmp1200 does not support 4wire RTDs (although you can connect RTDs with 4) should I get 4wire anyway? And do I need 1 TMP1200 per RTD? And then all 3 TMP1200s will connect to a single VINT Hub? Which then connects via USB to my PC?

Edit. so I need:
3 RTDs (4wire)
3 TMP1200
3 cables that connect the RTD to TMP
1 VINT HUB

Sound about right? Anything else?

One thing you need to consider is the connection of the RTD into the roaster ie the mechanical holding

On the RTD page on phidget they have 2 connections shown. Not sure what stock connections will come with your Quest M6. The cost for these connections are pretty reasonable so you may want to order one of them for insurance.

Just finished ordering one set of RTD/TMP1200 for my Huky.
