My point with regards to Tom's scores at SM is that even if I agree with them (and I tend to usually), there's always a massive amount of brilliant coffees that would otherwise be overlooked if folks only stared at the cupping scores. I think one of the Colombian's I was referring to earlier, that I picked up last year only scored something like an 86 and it was intensely good, better than many other higher scoring coffees I had at the time from them.

I imagine as The Crown (roasting/training lab) gets up and running this winter, we'll see even more roaster based information disseminating from them.
I was surprised there weren't any other home roasters at the Mejor de Nariño Tasting tasting at Royal on Friday afternoon.

It was my birthday, so I was celebrating it and National Coffee day all over the Bay. :D

Otherwise, I would have gone too.

Can we get together a Roast and Learn for espresso?

Something not too polarizing?! ;)

Just tasted this and the Hacienda La Esmeralda Private Collection back to back four days post-roast, the Mama Cata is definitely a bang-for-your-buck coffee. IMO this tastes better than 80% of pure-bred geishas I've had. The HLE private collection is also well worth anyone's time if they haven't had coffee from Esmeralda before, I had their auction samples this year and can vouch that there isn't a terribly steep drop off in quality between the auction lots and this

TomC wrote:I know we all stay pretty well keyed in on new releases from Sweet Maria's, so it's not like something from them is going to slide under the radar. But it does get my curiously sparked when I see comments like "competition worthy", and more importantly (to me) a very even, balanced scoring circle. I don't recall too often that Tom would use such a descriptor for a coffee, maybe once or twice in the past at most. They just released a Colombian microlot that looks quite good. I picked up 5 pounds. It reads quite sweet, bright and floral. I also don't get too tied up in their cupping scores, and pay more attention to the flavor descriptors. Many of the best Colombian's I've ever had, scored from 87-89.

This Colombian roasted up beautifully last night. It's very fresh and dense so it can take a lot of heat. I was able to push it almost 2 minutes of post 1C on my Quest just to get full bean expansion. I dropped it right as crack was finishing. Today it brewed up quite nicely. It's truly well-rounded, has sweetness, complexity, brightness and lots of body, so it'll likely make the first true S.O. espresso that is excellent that I've had in a long time.

Edit* Wow, it already sold out. I just checked the link. I guess I'm not surprised. I hope folks got in on it.

Sudan Rume. Washed. Crown Jewel.

We had a group buy earlier this year of the natural version of this coffee and it was an absolute stand out. I'm going to post a group buy of this coffee in buy/sell, this variety is amazing.
