To my fellow Home Roasters,

Edit from June 2018
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Getting Started Guide has been converted to the web so please read that thread with this in mind:

https://artisan-scope.org/docs/quick-start-guide/
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I recently received my North 500grm roaster. Getting my North up and running (once I figured out the Emergency Stop button was engaged at the factory) was easy compared to understanding Artisan basics. There's more to it than just hitting Start. What's the difference between Start and On anyway?

I wanted to begin to understand in more detail what Artisan is about and also share with others so maybe the learning curve is easier. There are many settings which I don't understand. What I have attempted to do is create a document that future roasters can use as a starting point when they get their machines. I am also trying to advance personal knowledge by creating a repository of what I have done and why. Currently there are links (at the end of the doc) to setting up a Huky or Hottop. If others are aware of links to other roaster models, please point them out to me and I will add them.

Assuming I have done this Google Document correctly you should be able to view and download it but not edit it directly. I would love to have suggestions posted here or sent to me via PM. I will edit the master and republish. Specific details on settings and their functionality is particularly welcome.

Version date and time will appear in the document under Who Is This For?

Hope this helps others as it has certainly helped me understand that there are many concepts I need to get my head around for Artisan.

I fully understand that the TRIER is my best friend, sorry Artisan, yet I work better when I understand concepts and hence my effort to grasp what it can and can't do.

All the best, Michael from Evergreen CO.

A great starting point is following this link to an organized study on Artisan:

https://www.hukyforum.com/index.php?act ... oads;cat=1

Susan is our go-to person on Artisan as she interfaces frequently with Marko the Artisan developer who is based in Germany.

I was aware of those resources. They are referenced in other posts and they are outdated to a prior version of the software so being a complete beginner I was lost. They were bits and pieces of the puzzle. I did like how she set up Buttons with both the kPA and the value 0-100. I tried to use them to get started and they didn't provide the full perspective for me. The configuring device is obviously quite useful for the Huky owner.

Also my intention was for HB users to have a reference here and not in the Huky forum. Thank you for pointing out these additional resources.

Nice work ! ! !
The guides I wrote a couple of years ago were very specific to the needs of new HUKY users at that time.
I no longer need guidance so I haven't read every page, but darn it looks like a very nice piece of work, and it's nice that it is based on the newest version of Artisan.

Thanks Susan, I just added a section with some questions to the community so if you know any of those that would be great to get feedback from an experienced user.

I'm not a member of the huky forum so I can't see the link. I tried to register, but it seems you need to know what island the Huky comes from in order to do so. Can someone enlighten me?

I think your questions 3 and 4 are general roasting questions rather than Artisan specific. I would suggest that you keep your document tuned to how to do the things you want to do with Artisan rather than getting sidetracked into roasting theory, but that's just my measly two cents.

As for the other questions, they are beyond the reach of how I use Artisan, so I can't help. I'm a simple home roaster with a bit of a knack for documentation....

The original HUKY Artisan docs are also on Google for anyone who doesn't want to join the HUKY forum:

Susan, I need to think about how the document lives and now we have mentioned questions 3 and 4. If I take them out and people read the thread later that could confuse so I added the following:

"Note it was pointed out that Questions 3 and 4 may be more roasting related questions than Artisan questions, yet if the purpose is understood, then how it's displayed and used in Artisan can be adjusted."

I may need to change workflow on updating a bit as things develop. Appreciate your thoughts above. Michael

I'm a Hottop (TC4C/HTC) + Artisan user. I think this is an excellent resource even as a non-Huky user. Hopefully it will continue to be developed to help fill in some of those knowledge gaps regarding Artisan features that are hard to find documented.

Kudos!
