Weber and Acaia (Orbit) - Page 25
Picked up the grinder from mrmoon today and excited to give it a try. I pulled about 4 shots this afternoon just to get it dialed in for the morning and am pretty happy with an app-less workflow. I did find about .2g retention in each grind but after doing a second purge and a knock I was spot on of my dosage. This was without RDT. A bit of PITA if you have to do that on every grind but we'll see how it goes!
I'll be comparing it to a DF64, Specialita, Niche and Lagom Mini. So far I've been pretty unhappy with the workflows of anything that requires a bellows and hoping the Orbit will be better.

I look forward to hearing your impressions and experiences. Hope you either post them here or start a new thread if this one is no longer available.developer_dad wrote:Picked up the grinder form mrmoon today and excited to give it a try. curious on the next drop. supposed to have one more drop before the new yrs, but didn't see it. still surprise not a full review yet or seen people trying out diff burrs. im curious on the ease of swapping burrs and alignment.

I might have been one of the first to sell my Orbit, but I found the app to be more of a gimmick than anything useful.developer_dad wrote:Picked up the grinder form mrmoon today and excited to give it a try. In comparison to the Lagom P64, I personally feel the Lagom has it beat in so many aspects. Mind you the price difference is more significant now that the P64 has increased in price... but well worth it.
I can't wait to see the Orbit 2.0 though as there's definitely a handful of afterthought in the release series.
Ah nice that was my video
I think with the SSP Cast burrs the P64 seemed to have mini stalls more often, with SSP MP burrs on speed setting of 3 it would be fine even grinding very fine for espresso using a light roast coffee. Setting of 2 would maybe have a mini-stall occassionally. But with the SSP Cast burrs I think it happened once even at setting 3 and the mini-stall (with those burrs) in the video was actually one of the worst / longest stalls I've had!
Vs the Acaia orbit, I haven't used it myself but looking at the specs, the Orbit is a little lighter in weight, the motor power is a little lower, and I noticed the minimum RPM is a much higher 600 RPM vs the Lagom P64s min. of either 200 or 300RPM, and in Brian Quans video he got a mini-stall grinding at that lowest 600RPM So Is suspect the lower power motor is why they didn't make the minimum go down any lower than 600!
Still 600-900RPM isn't bad and orbit has a little higher RPM on the top end (1500 vs P64s 1400RPM) the Orbit is a bit cheaper and has some more tech / features built in especially combined with an Acaia Lunar scale, I like the idea of having the option of it being Grind by weight as long as the retention is low.
There's also the Zerno which is promising, but it's even more of a basic grinder, without variable RPM, it has an auger bean feeding system and vertical oriented burrs which may be a benefit. It's also even cheaper! Lots of good 64mm burr grinders out there now. Oh and the DF83 might just push that trend on up to 83mm grinders. I can see more competition developing there too soon.

But it's at a much lower setting.
I think that's the G64 it's not really related to the DF64, and is a blatant knock-off of the Lagom P64. I've heard some not great things about that grinder, the RPM range like you mentioned isn't all that great (likely due to lower power motor) it's got relatively big 250RPM jumps and starts at like 900 RPM so you have like 3 relatively good settings before getting up to regular high RPM and then ridiculously high RPM which supposedly grinds so fast it clogs up the chute. The touch screen supposed to be pretty bad and finicky on it, it does look better lately than it did before (finish wise) so maybe they've made some improvements, but maybe not.bonjing wrote:Agreed the grind by weight plus lunar puts you into lagom territory. But for the features it's not bad. The new df64 with rpm control or whatever it was, I can't find it nowwas around the same price as the new orbit if I remember right, plus shipping. But the variable speed is set at 7 steps versus "fully"adjustable.
The nice thing is about the orbit is that you can actually see what your rpm is versus guessing. It would be nice if lagom put true reference points, but that's been addressed by many reviewers already.
DF64S is coming out later this year, that's the Variable speed DF64, it seems like they're taking their time developing it right. I suspect it would need a whole new type of DC motor. So hopefully they're doing it right!
DF64 v4, is pretty good, other options you might want to consider, is the Zerno, Eureka Oro SD, DF83, maybe even the Varia VS3 (I haven't used it but hear good things about it other than it being slow). The Eureka Oro SD is good but on mine the bellows didn't work well or consistently it works better without it, that way it's more consistent and there's still not too much retention. Not sure if the build is any better than DF64 really. Both are fine.nabuca wrote: As of now we don't know if the build quality is as good as the P64, it would be great if that is the case. I just hoped to get a grinder somewhat cheaper than the P64 but better that a DF64. As I said there is a lot of space in between the DF64/Niche and P64 regarding price and quality.
The Lagom P64, I've had two of them! Do have mini-stalls like hesitations sometimes grinding a light roast, for espresso, at very low RPM, like setting 1 - 2 and maybe once at setting 3 (With SSP cast burrs) as I mentioned in my other reply. Even at setting 3 (of 9) it's still lower than 600RPM where the Orbit was seen doing a similar mini-stall.Jonk wrote:Has Lagom P64 been known to stall at 600RPM? The Orbit seemed to handle the quick stall in Quan's video in a good way, but still a little disappointing. Couldn't find any discussion about stalling in the 212 page P64 thread, but there are a few videos out there at even lower RPM or seemingly faulty grinders.
Here's the RPM guide... Not sure if they changed the actual RPM on the newer P64s, or just updated the manual due to it being inaccurate?
I also noticed the same thing happens with the Weber Key similarly towards the lowest of the RPM range, I think both Weber Key and Lagom P64 does actually have programming where it stops to protect itself and then gives itself a little motivational speech (in a millisecond or two) and tries again and then succeeds!
I've never had either of those completely stall. I did have a Monolith Flat completely stall using a stale super fine grinding light roast coffee so like extra extra fine at a ridiculous 50RPM I think, that one I believe has a more powerful motor, even a reverse gear, but I had to open it up and clean it out manually before it came back to life. I thought I broke it... and I recorded a video while doing so

Does anyone have a discoloration issue with a dosing cup? I ordered mine in the first batch and noticed the discoloration after a month. Then I reached out to Acaia and they send me a new one as the first batch has a soft coating which could happen (they said). They are very supportive as expected (because it's lunar edition) and reply to every message in less than 12 hours which is pretty amazing.
Then I received the new one about 3 weeks ago and I noticed the same discoloration on the place where the dosing cup was placed with a magnetic sticker. Does anyone have the same issue?
+ some difference so far I found was the knocker coating. The first one is coated with the same matt dark gray color and the second one has just silver metal (may clear coat?). I felt the second one is better with less static. I'm not sure it's related but the first one was almost impossible without a plastic nose because it just splash all around. (note that this plastic nose is for when you don't use Lunar scale and makes the tip close to the dosing cup) but the second one I don't use a plastic nose and still, it's fine.
