The Lido 1, Rosco, and early Hausgrind (at least before mid-2014) use a different Italmill burr set. Peter has been adding some sort of black surface treatment to the Feldgind burrs since the 1.2 update, and I'm not sure what effect it has on grind consistency. Unfortunately Socratic declined to test the contemporary burrs against the Feldgrind in their recent hand grinder round-up.
Thank you Chris for updating this

Thanks for the writeup, mivanitsky! It's been tough finding a lot of info on this grinder, so it's nice to get people's insight.
Does anyone have any speculations to how the Helor 101's 38mm Italmill (contemporary) burrs would compare to the Lido E's 48mm Etzinger burrs in espresso? From my understanding, larger burrs lead to better clarity and flavor separation in espresso (I have very limited knowledge in espresso, hence why I am learning here)!
Alignment sounds like a cake walk for the Helor 101.

I am becoming increasingly convinced that alignment, and perhaps burr quality, design, and material may be more important than size. The little Helor does not perform badly beside the Monoliths, and is better than many espresso grinders I have owned and tried. I have not tried the Lido 2/3 Swiss espresso burrset, so I have no experience. My Lido 2 has never performed for me as well as the Helor for espresso, and this thing is as good as HG1 for clarity and mouthfeel, perhaps better, and I have 2 HG1s. It wipes the floor with Vario/SJ level flat burr machines, IMHO. If you can live with 25g or a little more at a time, this is a very good option, especially at the price and compact size.

That's great to hear. The 101 sounds like a very promising grinder. I'm certainly swooned by the solid block machining and the ceramic bearings (though I'm not sure if it provides much of a difference). I'm coming from a similar background, as I just sold my Lido 2 (Italian burrs) to make room for a higher end hand grinder.

Nice write up mike thanks
Also it is very impressive how many really great hand grinders are available to us these days & at quite reasonable cost
Thanks for pic of burrs too Bob...Very cool to see them all like that

May I ask which one? Plenty of hand grinders on the market, and Lido is one of the good ones.exploding_chemist wrote: I'm coming from a similar background, as I just sold my Lido 2 (Italian burrs) to make room for a higher end hand grinder.

Not to hijack mivanitsky's thread, but I have been weighing my options with the Commandante MK3 and the Helor 101. The Lido series is a great set of grinders, but I want to try something not explicitly available in the US (travelling to Europe this month for work).

Got one of these on order. Went for the contemporary burrs. Planning on using it for espresso and filter methods
