I would advocate for the use of a throat funnel, along with a plunger that pushes gently down on the unground dose, above the burrs. I have designed and printed 2 sets so far, one for a SJ and another for a Major. They work a treat for speeding up the feed into the burrs; eliminate popping action; quiet the noise echoing from the throat, and, as a bonus, the fit is tight enough that by lifting the plunger and dropping it, a slight column of air is pushed down through the burrs, forcing the last of the dust to thrust out of the chute.
Next- I found that lifting the back end of the grinder up by 2 inches helped the grinds fall out of the chute. I wrapped dense foam around a wood block and placed the rear feet onto that. This also reduces vibrations into the work surface by a significant amount. I am not sure of the physics of what is happening at the burrs as a result, but this tweak keeps buildup in the chute to a minimum. I also carved out and polished the chute with a dremel, as there is plenty of meat in the casting.

Thanks for the great suggestion. I will try to raise the rear and see what it does.

With the funnel/plunger setup and polished chute, do you still need to brush the chute? Would be tempting if even that can be eliminated. I've tried the silicone bowl method to create air pressure for blowing the chute clean, but decided that wasn't a good idea as it was blowing grinds into corner that it shouldn't.

If I were you, I would sell the K30 and buy second hand EK43 ( I think http://coffeesnobs.com.au/ will pop up sometime??? ) Yes, Keep the Pharos, as you still can manage the bring the Pharos when you traveling, though it is a bit bulky, much better than you bring the k30 or Robur .

Yes, less need for brushing for the SJ than the Major, probably due to the speed of the spin, but certainly not the clogged mass that I saw in your video. It more of a dusting than a clumping. I hate the feeling that the brush is pushing more grounds into the chute than out, so a thin layer never bothers me, that's just more of good feeling for keeping things tidy. One quick sweep is all that is needed.

I am using a M Major and single dosing. I also tilted the machine to increase the drop angle out of the chute and it does help reduce retention in that area. I have not polished it as of yet though. The idea of placing the control lid atop the burrs in place of the funnel is slick, I will be trying that. I have cleaned the burr chamber several times since tilting the machine and find very little residue other than oil. I also use a blower to clean the chamber after brushing the chute clean. A small vacuum tube would likely be better.

Your video was very impressive. I bought a Mazzer Robur E few days ago. I also tried this, and I also managed to achieve such results. I didn't do video, but I made some pictures of the results. I've done everything the same as you.

Thanks Peter. Enjoy the Robur E - it's almost like a cheaper version of Monolith since I can't afford them!

Congratulations Peter and I am very happy you have a good result just as Sam did. Very envy both of you have Such a GREAT Grinder ( Mazzer Robur a Timeless and Classic Espresso grinder always )
