Hello,

I'm fixing up an old mazzer SJ and i was wondering if the lower burr carrier is pressed on. I removed the single bolt that holds it into place, but i can't seem to pull the lower burr carrier out. Any ideas on how to pull it off? This thing is caked with old coffee probably from years back and i wanna try to get this thing thoroughly cleaned everywhere and give it to a friend as a gift. Thanks for any help in advance.

Yep, it's pressed on. That one's a bit of a bugger to get off.
I've taken apart several SJs, but I can't remember how I got that part off.

It's too tight to get a puller in there.

I think I didn't worry about it, and it came off in the process of pulling the motor shaft out of the upper bearing.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and if you think it's dirty on the top side....

ciao

Of you '*have* to take it off, you could get a puller at 'Kent's Stolen Tools' on Grant, just west of the Harley shop (something tells me that you know where the Harley shop is, I dunno what...) at Sixth. Tripod puller, and some longer bolts to go through and thread up to the carrier (where the burr usually gets screwed in and then just screw the center bolt on the puller in until it comes loose. Let me know if you decide that you have to do it, and I may buy the puller off you afterwards to keep it cheap for you.
Izzit going to anyone I know?

I did end up getting the lower burr carrier out by using my burly phillips head screw driver and a mechanics hammer. I just shoved in the screwdriver head right below where the shaft meets the burr carrier, gave the handle of the screw driver a few taps and I was good to go. Lino, you were right, their was some pretty nasty caked on goo in there. I'm pretty glad i took the carrier out, i have no idea how many years the cruds been there. The smell alone was pretty pungent/rancid.

lol, Psyd I am quite familiar with "kent's stolen tools", I've bought a few tools from them in the past. Its ghetto, but you'll be surprised at what tools they have around when you need them. I believe the store you might be talking about is the one with the huge table grinder sitting outside rusting. As for who its going too, its for a highschool buddy that graduated with me at Mt. View High school back in 98'.

?!?! I'm having a bit of a time visualizing this, and I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to taking tool steel to the guts of my grinder. Post a pic of where you placed what and who you hit with whom?

That's the one. Just a few blocks from my house, so I can go get whatever (and I do mean whatever) I need whenever I need it. And I have the advantage of getting just one of them, as opposed to a whole set. Pullers and such being the example. It's like an adult's toy store in there!
Not a guy named Bill, by any chance (hoping that my friend Bill has a grinder on the way with almost no effort on my part)?

The screw driver that i used fits right into the coffee exit chute, where the coffee goes into the doser. I put the screw driver in till it hit the area under the burr carrier where the shaft meets it. I then just tapped down on the screwdriver handle and out popped the carrier. A little bit of a scratch under the burr carrier, but other than that, nothing was damaged. I'm afraid i do not know this Bill that you talk of. The only Bill i know in Tucson is some old guy who plays paintball over at Sudden Impact out on Tangerine/I-10.

Jamming things in may cause damage to the shaft. An easier way is to use long bolts and tighten them in sequence. The bolts push against the main body and force the carrier off. The risk of damage is low because the amount of force required is very small.

Very clever, Paul. Thanks for sharing. (BTW, what sort of grinder is that?)

I agree, I'm definitely going to use that method next time. Looks a lot easier to do as well. Thx for the big tip, it'll definitely come in handy in the future.
