Not sure I buy burr seasoning as anything more than "folk wisdom". The Nuova Simonelli engineers were able to show that extraction yield (TDS) actually dropped with dirty/coated burrs and suggest cleaning burrs periodically.viveur wrote:I did grind about 500g of parboiled rice, but I'm not sure it made a huge difference. However 1.5 months since getting the grinder (and 1.5kg coffee total ground), and it's a lot more comfortable to grind with, even with light roasts. I can now mostly grind without stopping, whereas I had to do 1/3rd turns at a time when I first got it.
In case Barb and Doug are reading: thanks for building a great grinder! Apologies for my light roast abuse!
The Pharos definitely gets easier to grind with after you get used to it, but that's more you than the burrs.

Zac...it's the rough edges, and evenness of the burr set that needs some breaking in...I've never had "dirty burrs" as I don't grind coffee with oil, and clean my grinders regularly. Still, even the Sette, with it's small burr set produced a more flavorful grind...less bitters after 10 #s of break in. I'd say that quite a few here have similar experiences with their "Titan" style grinders, with mammoth burr sets. That said, as always, YMMV!

Yes, with the help of a wood turner friend.GregoryJ wrote:Hi mjoets,

Could any Pharos 2.0 owner please tell me the maximum vertical space of the lower cup/portafilter section? Wondering if my Flair portafilter will fit under there (I'm thinking not).

Tha maximum height of the ''portafilter section'' with the springs fully compressed is 5cm .

I finally upgraded to the 2.0. Getting the grinds out is much improved, but it's harder for me to grind without getting coffee everywhere. The reason is: I grind by sitting down, placing a towel between my knees, and then holding the grinder between my knees. With the 1.1 that worked fine, with the 2.0 that doesn't work because the sprung-plate can be pushed around, which lets coffee go everywhere. I'm still figuring out a new technique, but I might just have to push cardboard/foam/wood between the base and the sprung plate to "lock" it in place while grinding to let me keep grinding with the grinder between my knees.
(It's impossible to get enough leverage without the between the knees trick, unless I were to get some bench-dogs, but I can't install them where I live right now.)

Bench dogs or something similar mounted on any cheap cutting board won't work for you? You should still be able to place it on your lap if need be.viveur wrote:

+1...you beat me to it. Doug recommends them, I've used them wit an earlier Pharos. They work perfectly, and, in fact make the turning easier. takes 5 minutes to install.
