the moonshine or newer set?maccompatible wrote:Just got another replacement set of Mizens. I think the first replacement may have been defective, as these seem to be functioning as advertised. The grind setting now seems to be around 1-1.5 for espresso, so PLENTY of room to grind finer as needed. The taste seems sweeter and the pulls were pretty. Definitely happy with this swap

I received my P64 in very late August and I contacted Option-O to ask this very question. They confirmed these batches contain the new sandblasted version.
Thanks much!
A question for those of you who own both - will there be a huge, night-and-day in-cup difference in v60 filtered coffee brewed with these vs. the SSP unimodal multipurpose v2 burrs? Or will they be more or less be the same/very similar since both are meant to be multipurpose?

I haven't used the MPs, but I'd be VERY surprised if the brews are anything at all like the sandblasted 64OM.

That depends on your perspective, coffee, water, and skills. Perspective is a big one. I don't think there are any even plain "night and day differences" among the burrs that fall into a general category. In comparing 64 mm Cast V2, MP, and Mizen, it probably takes me a couple of weeks and several different coffees to have an opinion I trust myself about them. I don't have enough time with my 64 Mizens yet. With what I know so far, I consider them to be a quality burr, somewhere between the Cast v2s and the MPs. I haven't found a good reason to take them out of my P64.diyeverything1919 wrote:will there be a huge, night-and-day in-cup difference ... ?
Which one is "better" is it even harder thing to judge. I can understand why people enjoy the Cast v2 burrs. They're in a way more polite than the MPs. The MPs will put every defect in your face as clearly as they will every enjoyable flavor. Sometimes you don't want to know what's in that coffee!
To expand on the last post, I think it depends on the beans. I've had some amazing ones that tasted equally great using both MP v1 and Cast v1. For other, still high quality roasts, the burr choice has impacted whether or not I enjoy the coffee. Sure, there are other variables to tweak - but IME it's a fool's errand to work against the grinder.
I read this thread because I've been curious how the Mizens compare to SSP cast. Somewhere between CV2 and MP sounds positive to me.

It's not a huge leap but I'd still say noticeable enough. The channel is that the mixed technically has more body but the clarity isn't lacking, in fact it's a bit different. I'd treat the mizen more of a high clarity mid body burr set.diyeverything1919 wrote:Thanks much!

Thanks all.
Gone through about a pound of beans since the last post, experimenting with as many parameters within my control - didn't drink everything but it's definitely been a very caffeinated week
. Been around 6.8 on the grind dial lately and the coffee's been pretty dang good, not gonna lie.
Just had 2 diff bags of freshly roasted beans delivered, a bag of Kenyan and a blend. Will heed Jeff's advice and spend some more time with these burrs and put some more beans through them before forming an opinion.
What a great community, you all are good people! Thanks again for all your quick & informative replies & advice.
