Option-O Mizen 64mm Omni burrs for Lagom P64 - Page 40
Just ordered a p64 w/ the Mizen OM burrs over the weekend from Prima & eagerly awaiting delivery. Haven't gotten into espresso yet and don't own a machine, but would still like to confirm my grinder IS indeed capable of grinding fine for espresso for when I do purchase a machine. Any advice on what I should look out for, or how to check the grounds size for espresso brew-ability without actually brewing espresso? Any photos of a Mizen OM burr set that requires shims vs one that doesn't would be greatly appreciated! Asked Prima via their website's Messages feature but they don't seem to be monitoring that...
It really depends on what style of shots you'll pull, with what kind of roasts, basket, dose, machine etc.
A quick check could be grinding on the finest setting and see if the grounds can hold a fingerprint. That's very much espresso territory (could be too fine even).

Thanks for the info, will try the fingerprint trick.
Been obsessing over filter brews since about 2016, haven't dared to go down the espresso rabbit hole until now cuz it looks to be a bottomless pit. I think this grinder purchase will finally push me over the edge.
Been looking at machines with flow control, dying to try a "modern"/turbo shot, so will likely get straight into trying to pull those when I get a machine. With filter brews, I am into light/medium roasts with in-your-face fruity & floral notes. Haven't really found a cafe that sells specialty coffee that's also slow enough during peak coffee drinking hours to ask them to pull me a non-traditional shot using one of their NON-espresso roasts... Also some people on the Internet recommend grinding finer than you normally would for traditional espresso?
Wanting to somehow confirm my particular P64 + Mizen OM combination will have adequate grinding range to enable me to experiment, just in case I don't end up buying an espresso machine before the 1 yr warranty runs out. Was hoping stuff like this won't be an issue with an Option-O grinder + Option-O burr set combo...

You could also ask a local cafe (during less busy hours) to help you dial it in to make sure it will grind fine enough.jj248t wrote: Wanting to somehow confirm my particular P64 + Mizen OM combination will have adequate grinding range to enable me to experiment, just in case I don't end up buying an espresso machine before the 1 yr warranty runs out.
In talking with OO, they're acting like this is a pretty uncommon situation where it won't grind fine enough.

Basic answer is yes. The range a bit smaller than the MP, but not because you can't go finer or coarser but that your range is between .4-.8 ish. Still stepless so meh. I've pulled most of my shots without an issue. With the MP I was kinda in the same range just higher on the dial so potato potato.jj248t wrote:Just ordered a p64 w/ the Mizen OM burrs over the weekend from Prima & eagerly awaiting delivery. Since the SSP Cast and OO Mizen burrs are so similar, has anyone who has used them both have an opinion on which is better for Drip Coffee? And a follow-up question, how does the best of these 2 burrs compete for Drip against the Fellow Ode Brew Burrs v2? All 3 burrs seem to have similar descriptions on cup profile (medium clarity / medium body / all-arounder). Are the 3 burrs very similar for drip or does 1 stand above the others?
I have been using the Ode v2 burrs for a year now and find them to be a true all-around excellent brew burr. Works with all roasts of coffees well which makes it great to have if you only have 1 grinder.

Have you been able to dial it in for pour overs? Or did you just go back to brewing espresso with the mizen burrs?YoshiKenji wrote:Wow that's way lower than I was experimenting at, good to know! Might explain why I've been getting dull flavors. Your chirp point is at 0 on the dial? Also, what v60 technique/recipe do you follow?
Just got another replacement set of Mizens. I think the first replacement may have been defective, as these seem to be functioning as advertised. The grind setting now seems to be around 1-1.5 for espresso, so PLENTY of room to grind finer as needed. The taste seems sweeter and the pulls were pretty. Definitely happy with this swap

I am also in the 0.2-0.8 camp for medium/light espresso with the new Mizen burrs - I opened a service ticket based on others feedback. The motor stalls/locks up hard at low RPM and 0.2 grind size, to the point of having to disassemble and clear (loosening to 8 or 9 on the grind size doesn't help clear it somehow).
Fingers crossed I'll get a good replacement as you did... the variances seems too big between the sets.maccompatible wrote:Just got another replacement set of Mizens.
