If it had a doser like the Versalab.gbduarte wrote:A cool thing to do sounds like a valid answer =)
Would you use a motorized one commercially?

Now we just need someone to come up with a reasonable bolt-on kit.
Liking the kitchen-aid motor idea for the DIY side. I've thought about motorizing mine, or even selling and getting another motorized grinder. My wife's parents will be moving in with us, and it would be nice to make it easier on them and my wife to make coffee. But overall I loved the HG1 project from the start, as some have mentioned it's zero-retention is nice. Although I will admit I wrongly made the assumption that you could grind straight into a basket, largely based on what people were doing with the Versalab.

I use a 2014 Blind Tumbler as a funnel to dose right from the Versalab, or HG-One, into a basket.
Grinding from the HG-One is better because the grounds fall directly into the Acrylic, or OE Aluminum, or the HG-One funnels, rather than being thrown out with velocity from the Versalab. The Versalab requires the slight (1/4") elevation of the setup when grinding otherwise grounds fly everywhere.

I guess I misspoke, but I meant without doing WDT or other methods after dosing into the basket. Similar to what people report from the Versalab.[anonymized] wrote:Afterwards I stir the grinds vigorously before tamping lightly.
Do you have to do any additional prep after dosing? I wonder if it would be due to the motorization if so...FotonDrv wrote:I use a 2014 Blind Tumbler as a funnel to dose right from the Versalab, or HG-One, into a basket.

If I am motivated to try for the perfect shot then I use WDT, but generally I still get good results with just shaking the PF side to side to level the grounds and then thumping it on the mat then tamp.
The bean age and the bean, or blend of beans, and the tamp has more to do with the extraction than WDT from my point of view. I rarely use the naked PF since I view it as a learning tool.
Still love the motorized HG-One and I have settled on using the 83mm burrs and have retired the 71mm burr set.

Ah, ok...makes sense. It's not that it takes a whole lot of prep for me, I grind into a small pitcher. Shake and swirl for a 5s or so, then pour to distribute into basket. This always gives me a good bottomless pour unless I mess up putting into the basket.
I know I can grind and then attempt to mix up the grinds in the basket, but it never works quite as well for me as the above. Maybe motor does make some kind of difference.

I think the motor makes for a more even grind since the grinding speed is consistent, but no scientific evidence for that thought
