For those of you who have been following Socratic Coffee IG would have came across SSP Grinding Solution https://www.instagram.com/ssp_grinding/ mentioned multiple times. SSP is a custom burr manufacturer located in South Korea and judging from some of the tests conducted by Socratic Coffee the results are pretty impressive.

So a couple of emails later with Hansung(english speaking), i ordered their custom burrs which was around 170 usd inclusive of shipping.

Neatly packed and bubble wrapped.

Test claim to be done using this burr was sent to me.

The new burrs were used to replace my existing Mazzer Mini E modded super jolly burrs.

First impressions, very impressive build quality with smooth finishing. Going from Mazzer Mini E stock burrs to super jolly burrs were quite a big upgrade in terms of grinding speed (30% faster) and grind quality (less clumping), likewise going from super jolly burrs to the new burrs i have seen a significant increase in grind speed(at least 20% faster).

As the burrs are still undergoing seasoning, preliminary taste wise testing seems to have an improvement with much lesser bitterness, however with the limited bean types and shots pulled with the burrs so far i would reserve my comments till a much later date.

So to wrap up this short review, for those itching for an Super Jolly upgrade but with limited budget can consider ordering this burrs.

Special thanks to Hansung for his excellent customer service and prompt email replies.

They'll do quite well selling these. I hope they live up to the hype.

I saw Socratic's posts and definitely interested in the Super Jolly burrs but I think I'll wait till I need new burrs. I won't be throwing out the used burrs I have as I only have 1600 shots on the counter in 2 years!

Have been enjoying the burrs so far, grinds have lesser clumping even with the static screen removed.

Taste wise it is completely different from the mazzer stock burrs. Super jolly has been well known for it middle bassy notes, however with this burrs there is more flavour separations and liveliness to the cup.

I see that you are using a mazzer Mini E which i believe are still using the stock burrs, if so this would be a big and different upgrade. i definitely have no qualms recommending this upgrade.

I have been on the fence for a grinder upgrade for a while. My current grinder is a Mazzer Mini E and I have been considering one of the new single dose flats. When I saw Rytpoa's post I thought I would give a burr set upgrade a chance first. I ordered the burrs last Friday and had them on Wed this week. I ordered the burrs with a TiAICN coating which is probably overkill for my grinder which gets used for 2-4 shots a day. I have less than a pound of coffee through the burrs but initial results are very positive. Grind times for 18g have gone from about 20 sec to under 10 sec. There are far fewer clumps and the grinds are very fluffy.

Right now I have Redbird espresso in the hopper that is about 15 days old. The new burrs seem to bring out a lot of sweetness compared to the stock burrs. So far this seems like a big upgrade and a lot more cost effective than a new Monolith or the like. Thanks for the tip Rytopa! A not very good pic of the new/old burrs is attached.

Thanks for the update. I boughta Mazzer Mini E one year ago and upgraded early on to the Super Jolly burrs. If anyone else has a comparison from MME with SJ burrs to these new SSP K30 style burrs, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

I like the concept of better engineered burrs and advanced coatings. I think the best approach would be to take a grinder like the Monolith or the Titus, something that has exceptionally tight tolerances, then install these advanced burrs. I'm not sure if the technology inherent in these newer burrs can be fully realized if they're installed in grinders that have less than optimal alignment to begin with.

I like that Denis builds his Monoliths with burrs that he's carefully combed through and examined for flaws. I'd like to be able to send my burr set from my MonoCon into an advanced coating specialist after they're broken in (now), versus putting this hard coating on new burrs. In my head, for home use purposes, I think this would be the best approach.

Just in case others missed the price tucked away in the first post like I did, this set of burrs costs $170 US shipped. I emailed them. Not as interested now I'm afraid. Carry on...

This is my plan with the EG-1! I've been inquiring about the tungsten carbide SSP burrset for the 804 and plan to order one as soon as it's ready, which should be soon unless something's changed since I last talked with them. The coated steel is cheaper and probably about as good, but I'm really a sucker to try out one of the hardest (non extremely exotic) materials short of diamond.

Titus is also building a grinder using the SSP EK43 burrs as the stock set.
