I really like this approach (sounds very labour intensive for Denis but incredibly customer friendly). We like to talk about grinder alignment, but that is one step removed from extraction yield, which is purportedly one step removed from tastiness. With this QC check we're at least one step closer to coffee goodness.ds wrote:He tests each grinder and not just that they run and can grind coffee, but he pulls espresso with each and measures extraction yields with VST refractometer to ensure that they actually work well. He then compares that against his reference unit.

Agreed. This is almost impossible with a 'mass'-production approach. Plus, the price is quite sensible for the extra QC, low production and precision, without the fluff & hype. Denis had a prototype tested for 2-3 years in the backdrop prior to the production. Compared to the EG-1, this is way more tempting. I would pull the trigger if I'm in the market for a grinder (can't say I'm not tempted as it is now). Unfortunately(or fortunately) our weak AUD +tax + shipping helps curbing the desire a little...kwantfm wrote:I really like this approach (sounds very labour intensive for Denis but incredibly customer friendly).

Would you mind sharing that list of Versalab changes you would make?shawndo wrote:After using the Versalab for so long, I had a long list of changes I would make to it if I were ever to get off my butt and make my own and this seems to have just about all of them.

"long list" may have been an exaggeration, but this is what I had written down before I heard about this grinder. Keep in mind these were personal notes, so don't judge!kwantfm wrote:Would you mind sharing that list of Versalab changes you would make?
- 68mm or 83mm conical burrs. probably 68 since they are probably easier to find.
- Bottom mounted motor is totally the way to go.
- PF fork higher off the ground
- Minimal/nonexistant chute. Possibly removable/magnetic cover for cleaning access
- Chute off to the side of the burrs instead of under to distribute the whole bimodal thingy blah blah
I also think it makes it the right approach since the market isn't exactly 'mass'. The home market is a very small minority of the whole grinder market, and the enthusiast home market is a small minority of that minority!samuellaw178 wrote:This is almost impossible with a 'mass'-production approach.

Looks like an eminently sensible list.shawndo wrote:- 68mm or 83mm conical burrs. probably 68 since they are probably easier to find.

Yes, I think he got into some arguments, and just left....unfortunately.Chert wrote:Tekomino disappeared from these pages a while back.
Write to your Congressman. Even if he can’t read, write to him.

Very interesting. I wondered where Tekomino had gone. Glad to see he has been busy with something that seems very useful, and to hear positive words about his product development and support. I'll look forward to see some reviews of the KafaTek.

Really really like the look and the qc behind it. Looking forward to the review. I think the admittedly small home market can really benefit from another electric grinder that focuses on grinding rather than paying for sophisticated on demand electronics not really needed at home in my opinion.

I'm glad to see the monolith finally made it to production in some form. It was a nice grinder from what I saw here a couple years ago.
Hope it turns out well for him.
