Got out DF64 from espresso outlet. Never modified a thing. Listened to Joe. Below during grind and after with motor running. No RDT. Left the blown grounds on the top of the spout. That solved the static issue. Held stock dosing cup close to the spout while bellowing vigorously. Zero retention. Factory alignment was and is fine enough, and so are the itamill burrs. Happy with our grinder as is. Seems that any time to be spent wanting a better grinder best be spent getting a better grinder, if that were ever to be desired.

Just ran into some very confusing things wonder anybody could lend some help.

So just got a new DF64, I don't know which version is this, it has an old single piece silicone declumper, 45s auto-shut off timer, 2 o-rings, metal dial indicator, I also installed camprista mystho's style declumper and chute mod, torque screwed all 6 screws with 13 in-lbs, ssp mp burrs shimmed and marker tested to have both fully wiped, and ran into
some new problems which is confusing and frustrated during the first couple of grinds. The bean is a 14 days old medium blend roast.

1, so the very first grind didn't come out smoothly with around 2 grams lost and 2nd grind still 1 gram lost, so I opened it up to check, and saw a strangely huge amount of retention in a circle around the lower metal grind chamber wall about say 3 mm thick, right above the lower burr, and of course chute entrance got blocked. I wonder if this is
still common consider I've already got the new declumper? Or could it be the roast level or different beans??

2, It will also some times stop spinning during the middle of the grinding and at the end of grinding, and I have to push the button again to finish it, which is very confusing because I thought It only stops when there's no beans in it after 45 seconds?? And I should note that when it did this, it was still with all those retention in it, so I don't know if all those ground is strong enough to block the motor from spinning? Thanks for any kind help!

i can tell the 45s is on button press.
it doesnt have any detection, so grind stops abruptly if you start early and still have beans.

i had clumps issues on stock declumper, random and possibly huge retention, not much issue after mod. i diy soft flaps. no idea about mythos. grinds is very consistent in dial and retention (less than .5 without bellows).

Yea I just tested and looks like it will stop no matter what, that makes sense if it stops during the
the middle of the grinding. But for the declumper it's still kinda strange its still get clogging issue even after the modification which has that big jagged opening.

yes the 45 second is just a dumb timer no sensor. so if your grind is not finish by 45 second it will stop no mater what

do rdt it will help with retention

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of replacing my stock burrs with SSP Unimodals, and I noticed again that the bottom burrs only loosely fit over the middle circular part, they can move around a bit:
I remember that it was the same with the stock burrs when I aligned them.
Is this normal? If it is, where do I position the burr? I tried to do it somewhat in the middle, but it's never going to be perfectly precise.

Thanks,
Andras

You can tock 3 shims in the space of the same thickness to make sure you get it centred

Andras,
I'd also recommend checking if the 6 burr screws are all the same length. Top and bottom carrier screws were different lengths on my unit (early V1).

So it's rather normal, even with the stock burr? I was wondering if it's a production issue and could be fixed within warranty, but I just checked and I ordered it exactly a year ago yesterday in Germany, so it might be too late for that.

Hello,

I'm new to the forum but a long time lurker. I'd like to post my experience with the df64 in case it helps anyone. Sorry this will be very long winded.

TLDR: SSP burrs, VST basket and "proper" preinfusion improved things considerably.

Previously, I had Delonghi Dedica and Breville Smart Grinder. It would produce passable shots with no weighing and shots would pull through nicely even in a naked portafilter.

I was gifted a Gaggia Classic Pro for my birthday which of course necessitated a better grinder. I chose the df64 with titanium coated italmill burrs as the ideal candidate based on reviews and multiple forum posts.

I immediately replaced the GCP shower with an IMS screen, bought a naked portafilter, an IMS Competition 22g basket, 58.5mm tamper, WDT tool and a scale. I never weighed out, only weighed in and rather went by the blonding point.

No matter what, I could not produce consistent, tasty shots. Squirters everywhere, blocked holes and pucks that looked uneven.

An opv mod, blade distributor tool and weighing out did not make much of a difference. Shots tasted burnt and weak regardless of roast type and bean freshness. I stopped preinfusing out of pure despair and laziness. I would preinfuse (as ShadesofCoffee suggests without the dimmer mod) by turning the GCP on for a few seconds, then off to let it bloom, then pull the rest of the shot through. Without preinfusion, I had significantly reduced squirters.

Trawling through the forums, the reason made sense: I was likely fracturing the puck with this shonky preinfusion method, applying high pressure then turning it off. Instead, I let some hot water drop onto the puck, then attached it to the group head to let it bloom. This made a difference to the number of squirters I had but not much. The puck looked significantly better afterwards with less concentrated patches of oil.

Aligning the burrs with the marker method surprisingly made very little difference. Close to 100% wipe in one of the three orientations with ongoing squirters and patches of no flow. A declumper mod made no difference. There was coffee over the bench, on the wall next to it and all over the machine.

I was reaching the end of the line. The Delonghi setup offered familiarity. The jar of Moccona taunted me with it's promise of consistently bad "coffee" and the convenience factor. But I would rather lick a tramp.

After much searching and alcohol, I found a post stating the IMS Competition baskets are actually not very good. The baristapro line they produce is machined to tighter tolerances. After a very close look at the basket I had, I chose to purchase a VST 20g basket. Comparing the two visually, the IMS has a lot of machine marks which seem to be the result of carelessness or haste or poor QC. There were subtle marks both inside and outside the basket suggesting wide variability on hole width and uniformity. The VST did not have a single mark out of place.

This change significantly improved taste, but I had ongoing squirters.

I cleaned up my kitchen bench top yet again.

As a last ditch attempt, I picked up the SSP Red MP burrs, aligned and ran 250g of dark roast through it. I was getting late for work so I threw a hastily put together light roast shot. The surprise was both visual and on the tongue: an almost perfect pull with a nuanced flavour and very little bitterness. I had been granted access to heaven.

Now I'm thinking about starting an Onlyfans for espresso porn. The vast majority of the shots I pull look perfect and taste incredible. Dark or light, with a little tweak on the grinder dial, I can get consistently beautiful pulls and flavourful shots.

I have the Shades PID, flow control dimmer, gauge and topbox on the way to me at the moment. This was a journey, a frustrating one, but the Moccona jar has now become an important ornament. A confusing reminder of what was and what should never be.

Thanks for reading, I hope this helps!
