LG, here's a link to the 900rpm version for sale in the US.

That atom does look like a great option for the home. I was considering the current model - as well as the 65e and a few others - when looking at the Olympus a few months back. I'm glad i went with the 75e. Had the Atom been available in 75mm TiN it would have been a tougher call though for sure.

I have the same grinder, I would like to ask you

- Mythos burr alignment why you need that, you just install it as it's why you need the alignment it's not clear
- Do you recommend removing "clump crusher" and why.
- Do you recommend open the grinder as you did and clean it or the normal cleaning in enough

Keep in mind that not all the burrs are the same. I bought a demo Olympus from a good vendor with stock burrs and he put in Mythos burrs for me but they where slightly thicker. I could then only grind from turkish to even finer then turkish which made the grinder completely useless. This couldn't be fixed by the very respectable vendor even with help from Eureka so make sure you buy one already fitted with the Mythos burrs. He eventually ordered a brand new one from the factory because I didn't want an Olympus with stock burrs.

The new model is much better then the older one (check the new portafilter fork). I've owned both and both with Mythos burrs. The timer on the newer version was consistent within 0.2gr 9 out of 10. The one double that was off by more then 0.2gr was within 0.5gr so it's very consistent.

Looking at the Atom and the Olympus I like the Olympus much better. The black plastic thing they punt in the beans on the Atom seems to give a lot more broken and scattered beans on top of the burrs where this isn't the case with the simple design of the Olympus. Putting Mythos burrs in the current Atom wouldn't make it a better grinder.

Atom with the new black plastic flap in place:

And without (this is also how it looks in the Olympus):

Having the 1400 rpm version never bothered me as in home use it won't heat up that much that you need to worry. I don't know how that would turn out in a commercial environment.

That black ring is just a plastic piece one can easily remove!

That ring should help in guiding the beans into the burrs but is completely useless in my opinion. Without you no longer get that mess.

I believe the Atom with Mythos burrs will essentially the same as the Olymlus with Mythos burrs. No reason why not.

But the proof of...

Alignment:
I have a feeling that the burr alignment is not necessary at all. The way the burr holders are designed there's very little room for movement. Factory spec install seems to only be able to be done in a very tight tolerance. Perhaps there's another 2-3% of alignment left that can be done by shimming. I came across the doc linked in the beginning and it sounded interesting so i figured i'd check mine when i had a chance.

Clump Crusher:
It's unclear, i left it in, i may remove it in the future. the next time i clean the grinder i'm going to see what it looks like in there and if i can clear out retained grinds without disassembling it again. If i can't i might remove it just so regular cleaning is easier. I'm not too worried about it though.

Cleaning:
I've been removing the top burr and cleaning the retained grinds (which is very little) out of the grinder maybe every month or so. If i run out of beans on a Saturday and have some time i'll clean it, otherwise i let it go another week. One of the things i love about this grinder is the ability to open it up and get it clean without losing my grind setting. I don't anticipate needing to (or wanting to) take it apart the way i did with any regularity. After seeing where the retention happens i know i can confidently clear the entire path without disassembly, assuming the right brush. I used to use a mazzer and taking the top burr off meant recalibration of the grinder and burning a bunch of coffee - as a home user it wasn't something i ever liked doing. That - and pulling the mazzer apart was like trying to restrain an angry dog.

I owned this for quite some time. Don't like it. When you purchase something of this value, you expect better quality.

What didn't you like about this grinder? In my eyes it's the best value for money titan-grinder on the market.

Hey Erik,

May I kindly ask you to elaborate on the portafilter forks between the new and old versions of the Olympus? Possibly attach some photos? I've received a new Olympus in the mail and fear it may be an older version.

thanks.

FYI, I aligned my burrs on a Eureka 75E last week. They came around .001" out of alignment from the factory as measured by a dial indicator. I was very impressed! That said, they needed a little breaking in before it would grind espresso.
