I get the feeling that people clumping issues stem largely from the relative humidity in their area. That being said, my previous grinder, (a Grinta) produced boulders always requiring the WDT whereas the Vario does not.

I'm just being very cautious since I've done the grinder shuffle already many times. I've done the cheap $20 Krups blade, then the mediocre $90 Infinity, went to a $200 Cunill that was a behmouth, and now @ $400 I just hope I can quench my upgraditis of grinders.

I suspect that much of the "upgraditis" we experience is not a function of the equipment we have, as much as it's a function of the equipment we wish we had. That is to say, after we achieve a certain level of equipment, the need to upgrade is satisfied. What remains is a desire to upgrade -- not a need.

I borrowed a friend's Vario for two weeks and set it up next to my Rocky. The Vario was easier to dial in and produced shots that were more silky than the Rocky. I didn't have any clumping problems with it. Congrats on your purchase, I think you'll enjoy it. I thought about getting one after using it, but last week went the used sj route and am looking forward to its arrival later this week.

Oh, I need to update my response. This morning it all went down hill. I turned it on and the thing just melted into a pile of goo! Shame really.

Of course I am kidding. I think you made a great decision. The quality in the cup is the most important thing and few disagree that the Vario excels on this issue! Enjoy.

Wow! you are "upgrading" from the mazzer mini to the Vario!?

Please, as a MACAP M4 grinder owner (very similar to mazzer mini), can you please share what kind of benefits I could achive from the Vario over the MACAP/MAzzer mini?

Note: I'm not grilling you here, I'm only asking b/c I have recomended to a freind that is just getting into espresso that he buy the MACAP, so if there IS a compelling reason to change my advice to the Vario, I'd like to pass it along. THANKS!!

The Vario scored on par (actually very slightly ahead I believe) than the Mazzer Super Jolly during a thorough taste test shootout performed by some of the HB members. Seeing as the SJ is regarded as better than the Mini, well.. there you go. While it is solid, the Vario does not share the tank-like construction of the Mazzers.
