To measure that surface, you want to mount it on the shaft so you can rotate it around the mounting surface.

I'm not thrilled about the "Last Word" indicator's probe not being at right angles to the surface being tested, but it at least shows how the Titus tooling works.
(Being at an angle reduces the reading on the dial -- to about 70% at 45°)

Does that brace fit tightly into the slot in the motor shaft?

I was going to use foil around one end to help it fit more snug.

It needs to not move at all (relative to the shaft) to be useful.
Foil might help, but I'd look into a hose clamp or something similar to really hold the brace onto the shaft.

Makes sense. I wonder if anyone has 3-d printed a device to hold the indicator in place
