98mm Burr Choice for Lagom P100

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

Hello!

So I finally sourced a Lagom p100 up here in Canada. It should be ready to ship in the next couple weeks, so I need to decide on a burr set. Right now I am debating between 98mm HU and 98mn UL.

For context, I primarily drink light to medium-light coffee. I solely brew pour over, but would like to get into espresso down the road. I am coming from a conical grinder, but am looking forward to something that has clarity, and highlights acidity and sweetness.

Any advice on which burr set to go with? If I go with UL, it seems that it won't be very suitable for espresso. If I go with HU, will I be missing out on my pour over results?

Thanks for your advice!

I'd go with LU (not the same as UL/ULF) or Cast if I was going to be using it for both espresso and filter.

Check out Eiern's posts on page 3 of this thread for some good comparisons:

ULF in 98mm is great for longer ratio espresso. Other than the need to season them with ~25kg they're great. Really hard to get harshness with them (unless the coffee isn't great)

I received my P100 about 3 weeks ago. I ordered with the "brew burrs". I'm also exclusively pour over, chemex etc. I'm quite happy with them after a bit of burn in. There is a bit of a learning curve in terms of RPM's and grind size, with my original objective of reduce grind size as much as possible, while reducing fines, while maintaining pour over times.

After dialing it in, and burrs burning in, my results are pretty good. Roughly 2grams of fines, in a 26g charge. I may look at further calibrating the burrs, but overall I'm very pleased.

The results are excellent. Clarity 8/10, sweetness 10/10, acidity (varies depending on temps and brew method, but exceptional all the while).

What grind setting do you usually use for pour over? I have the same brew burrs and am playing around with settings too.

Awesome you're liking it! I ended up getting the 98mm HU burrs. Just arrived a couple days ago and so far am loving it! Been using only for light roast pour over (origami) so far. I'd say clarity is close to 10/10 and sweetness 8/10, based on a limited amount of brews so far.

For others using HU burrs, what settings are you landing on? I'm finding around 6.8 seems good so far.

I have had my P100 for a couple of weeks. I am very happy with the grind for both brew and espresso. I have the stock burrs, and use speed "3" and .8 to 1.4 for espresso with the lower setting being for some single origin espresso experimentation and I use 6.5 to 7.2 for brew depending on the bean. They have changed the magnetic bean cup accessory (not the magnetic espresso funnel) from the original one I had seen and I am still playing with that to understand exactly how it works.

8.3 - 9, depending on speed and what I'm grinding for. I'm finding that the fines are reducing as the burrs break in so the setting is still changing a bit. I think this is about the right range though. I'm also zero'ing in on speed at just under 3 on the dial. Brews are getting better by the day.

PS, noticing my settings are very different from others. I've adjusted the zero point to point of first burr chirping.

My typical brew is 26g coffee, 17-1 and a brew time under 3 min. It's a bit stronger then most prefer but it suits me.

Hey guys,

I don't know if it was already said somewhere in the forum, but Option-o are working on 98mm Mizen burrs! They just told me that 5 minutes ago. So exited for that.

I have a P100 and would love to have a more complex and sweet burr set, they might be perfect for that for espresso.

Did some of you tried their 64mm Mizen for espresso?

I have a p100 with brew burrs and even though I love them for competition grade very light roasts, I sometimes find it challenging to dial in "normal" quality light roasts, as these burrs are not forgiving and expose any kind of bean/roast defect, often extracting a bit harsh flavors, esp beans from Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi ... so with such beans I try to decrease extraction while keeping acidity and sweetness balanced and not getting a cup that is too watery, which can be a really difficult job sometimes. I'm usually at 6-6.5 grind setting for 1 cup v60, seasoned burrs.
