All good points, and I'm pretty certain that the Silvia is the right machine for me, at least in its tier. At $600 it fits in my budget, but I am curious as to what machines would come into consideration if I were to part with $200-300 more, although the chances of this are slim at best.

Yes, but the Silvia, for instance, is less than $500 in the US and about $600 in europe.

It's still a good machine in its class, there's just a bit more to choose from today than we had before.
