This is something I never hear mentioned, but perhaps that's just because it's mostly common knowledge: just like the area comprised of holes is less on a single than a double basket (so you can extract twice the volume with a double in the same time as a single), a triple has 50% more hole area than a double (assuming in all cases we're talking about baskets from the same manufacturer). Thus, when you switch from a double to a triple basket, it's not surprising that you may have to grind finer.

You do have to grind finer, I've never been in a situation with my doubles and triples that allowed me to have a same grind/dose setting.... Regardless of whether you're going to triple or not, if you're dosing less into any basket you need a finer grind. (double or triple) I probably wouldn't have to change the grind too much (thicker puck would mean more resistance), if I created the SAME amount of headspace using both baskets, but I don't like to dose 26-28g of coffee... it's a cost/benefit thing and I've never noticed enough of a taste difference for me to have to almost double my costs. If I have one a day, it's almost a week's less of coffee at huge triple dosages. I do however, occasionally like to dose 21-22g into a triple basket. I usually like the results of that combo...

Discussions about dose and grind changes always assume the same basket is being used before and after the changes. If you change baskets, you can use the same grind providing you change the dose in proportion to the ration of hole areas. A decent approximation is the ratio of the diameters of the perforated area at the bottom of the basket squared.

I guess with my setup, I was playing
at "borderline doses" with respect to baskets.
Thats why I wasnt sure if I was
better off leaving less head space, or dosing alot
higher with a triple basket at the same grind.

I guess ill keep playing around with finer grinds
with the double to see how that goes.

Somewhat related to this thread, I talked to
the Barista at crema, he uses 21 grams for his
doubles. He doesnt do singles, and I can understand
why by his typical customers. What I wanted
to ask was what was your opinion about how to
best pull a single shot with his roast?

Im currently having the best luck with a 14-15 gram
with a double basket, I guess thats a ristretto.
