16% RH around here. Chapped lips, winter itch, solidifying mucous and the flu are what others complain about. But for us, who have more reasonable priorities, normalization of grinds matters more.
To RDT or not to RDT? that is the question.
To WDT or not to WDT? that is also a question.
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of subsurface charges,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing charges end them?
May all subsurface trapped electrons find a humid path to protons they can cancel, and taketh the clumpth away!

Assaf,
Thanks for the morning smiles. It's static season all year where I live in Colorado at 7750 feet, yes worse now. RDT every day. Maybe I need to go to three squirts.

Have you tried electrically grounding your coffee? I had clipleads linked to a grounded surface I used in my receptacle for ground coffee for my Bunn G1AssafL wrote:16% RH around here. On the VL static affects my grind at substantially lower RH. Last time we had less than 10%. Even then the clumps were minute.
BTW - grounding may help discharge surface charges, especially if the burrs are not coated. But the main problem are subsurface charges. Given a fresh FC roast, coffee is an insulator and subsurface charges are stuck. RDT allows these charges to conduct out of the coffee.

Yep the high cost of static free - runaway taxes, traffic and stress. Maybe next year instead of a gas tax increase there will be a static free tax.DaveB wrote:Static? What's that?

No offense intended - I lived in Marin for many years and in CA for nearly my entire life. Finally realized there was more to life than that weather report. The downside is I now need three sprays of RDT this time of year.

San Quentin is accepting new residents rent free. Right down the road...
Not sure they have 3rd wave coffee though...

This ^ is my weather condition year-round. I'm only a few miles away from Mill Valley as well.
And this ^ is the result that came from my grinder before the RDT method was "resurrected" courtesy of Andy Schecter/ David Ross.

looks both fluffy and clingy.
Static is probably only an issue if it causes the density of dry coffee to lack uniformity. E g stratification of fines and boulders.
