Thanks for the guidance everyone. Happy to report the situation has been resolved. It turns out that the original shower screen must have been a bit wider than spec, making it exceptionally hard to get the gasket in. I purchased a replacement shower screen, and it was relatively easy to insert the gasket with a chopstick.
