Prior to inserting the PF, raise the lever to the point just before the sleeve hole is exposed. At that point, insert the PF, then do your not-too-slow lever raise to fully open. This method minimizes the chance of puck disruption.

Interesting observation that is, yet somewhat explainable given the specifics of the inlet.
Coincidentally I raise the lever close to open position before securing the portafilter and then push lever up swiftly.
