I've been using this distribution tool since September. I had also used a friend's OCD and this thing's shallower fins definitely meant that it retains less coffee. I've also noticed that I can usually turn the "little retention" into "no retention" by spinning it backwards a couple times before picking it up.

I have the generic Chinese one that's been rebranded about a thousand times from a bunch of distributors.
If you search eBay or Amazon for "espresso distribution tool" or "coffee distribution tool" you should come up with plenty of options.

Thanks Dominick. Any notable difference in shot/pour quality? I'm thinking the design of the BT Wedge/Chisel is superior as there is very little flat surface to cause pre-mature compression of the grounds before distribution/grooming. Of course both are about 4-5x the cost of the knock off! It'd be great if someone with both OCD/knockoff and Chisel/BT Wedge could do side by side comparison. Even based on theoretical superior design, I think I'd rather spend the extra $ rather than wonder if I have the best tool or not. Plus the BT Wedge looks fantastic.

I also have the knockoff Chinese one. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I figured it would be worth the try for the price. Would love it to replace the wdt with my HG-1.

I've been using the OCD, 2nd generation, daily for three months. Previously, I had been using WDT with a stylus and tapping afterwards to get the surface of the puck level before tamping. However, I was very unsuccessful at tapping, continually shifting the coffee back and forth. The result was more variation in the pours than I wanted.
With the OCD, I continue using WDT, to get the bottom part of the puck fully distributed, and then smooth out the top with the distributor before tamping. The resulting pours are satisfyingly consistent in appearance and taste.

This is my experience as well. With my EG-1, I use the blind tumbler followed by my OCD tool to groom the top of the basket. With my bottomless portafilter, I have dead on results every time....but thats mainly (if not all) due to the redistribution of the grinds. I honestly think that just the use of the OCD tool alone may actually hamper my extraction.mathof wrote: With the OCD, I continue using WDT, to get the bottom part of the puck fully distributed, and then smooth out the top with the distributor before tamping. Anyone have an update on the Chinese distribution tool available on amazon? Thinking of getting this along with one of the push tampers.

My regular coffee is Red Bird and with the Vario I find I get almost no clumping but I still use WDT with a motion that ends up grooming the dose into a slightly convex mound just about level with the VST lip. Perhaps due to occasional fatigue, I get about one bad shot in seven with my usual workflow, most often micro-jets and slight under-extraction - not quite gushers, but a 23g shot shouldn't drop in 25 seconds.
Anyway, I've seen the (real) Dozer in action - most recently at Unlimited in Sumida (Tokyo) on Tuesday - and decided to look it up. Unfortunately I can't really justify the cost, so I came here for alternative suggestions and found this thread. After researching the various legit models as well as the clones, I decided to give the Kafatek Grooming Tool a try.
Though it's more than double the price of the various Dozer clones, it's still just over ⅓ the price of the Dozer. I expect that I'll still need to WDT with clumpier coffees, but if I upgrade my grinder to one that clumps less (the 270W is in my sights after five years with the Vario) I may be able to skip WDT. I'll be sure to report my experience here.
FWIW Denis has it listed in his store now.

Nice. I recently bought and received the SAI puck type distribution tool. It also works very well and coffee doesn't stick to the bottom.
