I wonder if we're being faked out by the browser cache. That is, if you visit the same thread via an unread link, the browser may assume it can show a previously cached version of that link even though it's actually changed. Clearing the browser cache and re-clicking the link would verify or refute this possibility.

I just noticed, if I go through Notifications, I get the correct message. If I look at the thread list and pick one marked unread, I see the problem.

Just emptied my cache (Firefox 48.0.2) and ... so far, so good!

Excellent, I've added a hint to the browser so it won't cache the result for threads.

Cleared browser cache and all seems to be working properly again.

Today so far it all seems to be fixed. This is the first time in a while that everything has worked correctly.

Hi Everyone:

I've been having this problem lately with one thread. I partially emptied my cache and hesitate to tick off every box. Are there additional ones that I should include? Checking the two boxes you see now shows the correct stickies for threads where I've posted but puts me on the first post of each. When I select the most recent post in that thread, close the thread and return to it, I still am directed to the first post.

For this particular thread, only "Cached images and files" would matter.
