Don't know if this is the right place to post.
Just read in the San Francisco Chronicle about a class being offered by UC Davis - http://www.sfchronicle.com/business/art ... b953294c5a.
Should be interesting since Davis is known for agriculture and food science.

This sounds very cool. I wish they had this course when I was going to Davis. I agree that there is a dearth of real science about what really happens during the growing, roasting, and brewing of coffee. Nice that Peet's contributed so much money to the program too. Hopefully this will help coffee to be taken as seriously as wine or beer.
Lock and load!

To participate the in the "play at home game" you can actually buy the textbook for the class on Amazon:

One of the things so far that I found a bit humorous (I'm only a couple chapters in to the book) is that the required course materials list a $40 blade grinder right next to a $700 refractometer.

That book is horrible too. It's been collecting dust on one of my shelves for about a year now.

I expected something new, information wise. It's rather thin on content. Also, like you, I noted some of their product recommendations and chuckled.

Draw your own conclusions however.
