Just picked up a nice tamper. Yes, I know that the tamper isn't really as big a factor in espresso prep as some people think, but it's something you hold in your hand a lot and use everyday. It's a tool and nicer quality tools are more enjoyable to use.
After trying out a few tampers over the years I'd figured out what I wanted:
I had a surprisingly hard time finding a tamper that met these specs until I came across the Pesado 58.5 which ticks all the boxes. Pesado is an Australian espresso accessory company that aside from making tampers also makes portafilters, handles, and offers other items like baskets and shower screens. The Aussies definitely take their espresso seriously and there seem to be quite a few interesting things coming from down under recently.
The price was $120 AUD (just under $90 USD) and included international shipping and amazingly it arrived only three days after I ordered it. Impressed so far.
After trying out a few tampers over the years I'd figured out what I wanted:
- Flat bottom
- 58.5 mm diameter for edge to edge basket fit
- Sharp edges
- Beveled sides to minimize risk of suction
- Quality nicely finished wood handle, no plastic or aluminum
- Comfortable shape and good balance in the hand
- Minimal or subtle markings, no large logos or weird designs
- Reasonable price
