I have no current desire to get a DE1 for the reasons that others have stated (looks, noise, tablet, etc.) but I do think it would be the perfect machine if I had a cottage or perhaps spent winters somewhere warm. Being able to put it in its own case and easily bring it is definitely appealing.

This is a fun topic, so I might diverge a little ... Espresso machines get entirely too much focus, and the actual coffee gets not nearly enough. If people really want to improve the quality of coffee they are drinking, it would be worth spending some time and money on comparative tasting of different roast levels, roasters, coffee processing methods...

My experience with the encore (used to co-own one at the office) is that it's pretty terrible. I don't recommend them even to beginners. I imagine the niche would be an improvement for brew or at a bare minimum no worse. The virtuoso and preciso (same burr) on the other hand outperform larger conicals Ive tried when used for brew....
